Susan Eley Fine Art

Susan Eley Fine Art Conceived as a salon-style gallery, SEFA NYC is situated in an Upper West Side townhouse in Manhattan.

Susan Eley Fine Art (SEFA) was founded in 2006 by Susan Eisner Eley, who continues her tenure as owner and director at the gallery’s original location in NYC—as well as its new venue in downtown Hudson in Upstate New York. The space offers intimate viewing experiences, differentiating itself from more formal presentations characteristic of the “white cube” gallery model, ubiquitous within dominant

contemporary art circles. SEFA hosts a dynamic roster of American and international artists, and focuses on contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists, who work in a range of media—encompassing painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography. Solo and group exhibitions at both NY venues showcase abstract and figurative work, created by a diverse body of artists from the US, Latin America, Asia and Europe. In addition to its regular exhibition programming, SEFA has hosted artist talks, political fundraisers, literary and poetry salons and panel discussions on a variety of cultural and political topics—as well as participated in art fairs in Miami, Houston, San Francisco, New York City and Toronto. A supplement to recent virtual exhibitions, SEFA Hudson was established in Summer 2020, initially as a “pandemic pop-up.” Within the past year, this new satellite space has become a principal gallery within the Hudson Valley art scene—integral in welcoming and expanding both local Upstate art communities and visitors to this burgeoning arts region. The success of this space represents owner Susan Eley’s commitment to adapt to these unprecedented and ever-changing global conditions while continuing to share art with broad audiences. SEFA is a small business that is female-owned and operated, and that supports feminist and BIPOC artists and principles.

Congrats to the lovely Lisa Pressman on her presentation with Zürcher Gallery during Frieze Week, NYC, 2026. The natural colors, the varying forms and the textural density in these new works are a visual delight.

Based in West Orange, NJ, Lisa Pressman works on canvas and on paper and has regularly shown with SEFA. She is especially known for her encuastics, which use elements such as wax and letraset in their layered compositions. Pressman developes a language to create tactile artifacts while referencing stored memories.

During this year’s “Frieze Week,” SEFA owner Susan Eley visited many wonderful shows and art fairs in the city! We are happy to offer works by Pressman and other contemporary artists and invite those interested to visit susaneleyfineart.com.

Thank you to for the feature in entitled “10 Exhibitions to See in Upstate New York This April.” The exhibition “Deirdire O’Connell: New Portraits” is currently on view at SEFA Hudson through April 26th. The Gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM-5PM and by appointment. Please contact [email protected].

“Deirdre O’Connell: New Portraits” at Susan Eley Fine Art presents a series of gold-tinted portrayals of the artist’s friends and colleagues, including actors and writers. These images are both loving and candid in their representation of the sitters. In “Zoom #6: Nicole” (all works 2026), for example, a woman with a gorgeous floral headpiece and eyes closed, holds up her hand in a “stop” gesture. The squinted expression of “Bobby #3” and the billowing smoke cloud departing from his mouth suggest personal strife. In the “Dan #1-6” series, we see this same character making a variety of theatrical facial expressions. The only painting to present figures from behind, “Jenna, Banks Mateo and Lucy,” is a collaged work that features two women as they hold a child with antlers by the hand and lead him into water in a moment of graceful wandering. — Text by Taliesin Thomas

Opening Reception Tomorrow!

SEFA Hudson is pleased to announce the exhibition “New Portraits” by Deirdre O’Connell. The artist will be present at the Gallery on Saturday from 4-6PM for a reception. This show of recent paintings is on view at SEFA Hudson (433 Warren Street) through April 26th. The Gallery will be open on Saturdays from 11AM-5PM and by appointment; please email [email protected] to schedule a visit.

“New Portraits” includes figure studies of O’Connell’s friends and colleagues—the characters within her daily life—writers, actors and more. These people are significant to her, deeply enmeshed in the New York City theater world. Yet, their decorative qualities endow them with a pure visual pleasure, able to be appreciated by all. In the “Zoom Meeting Portraits,” viewers are met with close-ups of the faces, expressions, gestures and interiors that O’Connell observed through her computer screen—translating these elements through her mixed-media techniques.
