1, 2, or 3?

Abe Ajay challenged the boundaries of mid-century , including elements of painting, architecture, and into his practice.

He incorporated found objects into his works, including cigar molds, k***s, dowels, geometric blocks, and transparent paper. Each combination of these elements served as a continuation of the unexpected and of surprise.

Within Ajay’s artwork resonates temperaments of vitality, invention, harmony, rhythm and balance.

His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim, Smithsonian, Metropolitan Museum of Art and more.

Driscoll Babcock represented Ajay during his lifetime, and the gallery’s association with the artist spans more than 20 years.

Edwin Dickinson created what Lloyd Goodrich called the “precise realism of dreams.”

His subtle, naturalistic skill belies a tendency to intertwine what appears to be visually both real and unreal, to explore perspective and light, and to distill abstract forms.

In 1937 Dickinson visited Les Baux and the ancient abbey of Montmajour. He created this drawing of Montmajour in Wellfleet, MA in 1943 from a photograph.

The drawing is a characteristic example of the artist’s “reminiscing” on a place which moved him.

Carl Gordon Cutler (b.1873), is known for his pioneering use of .

By 1901, Cutler had exhibited at the Paris Salon, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1913 his work was exhibited at the inaugural Armory Show in New York.

Cutler made annual painting expeditions to Maine’s Penobscot Bay for 30 years. He reveled in the region’s brilliant sunlight and reflective sky and sea which seem to suspend time for the tree-clad hills, islands and harbors.

Cutler was a respected color theorist and in 1923 with Stephen Pepper he published a book on color theory that outlined a scale of 168 colors, as well as incorporating as a significant element in creation.

Cutler’s Maine watercolors constitute an important body of work within the American watercolor tradition, with other notable exponents of the medium including Winslow Homer, John Marin and Andrew Wyeth.

Cutler exhibited widely during his career in Europe and the United States including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

In recent years, Richard Wilson has come to be credited as having a profound influence on the development of Romanticism and leading 19th century artists including John Constable.

John Ruskin observed that with "Richard Wilson the history of sincere landscape art, founded on a meditative love of nature, begins for England."

Wilson’s pioneering explorations in painting had a strong and enduring impact on future generations of British artists, including a profound influence on John Constable, Turner, and by extension to many American Hudson River School artists.

This drawing is distinguished by its provenance: it was acquired from the Herbert Brill Estate and is accompanied by the original bill of sale from 1965, inscribed Martin L. H. Reymert. It was also owned by Mavis Strange, London, and Roy Davis, New York prior to 1965.

Wilson was a founding member of the Society of Artists in 1760 and of the Royal Academy in 1768. He exhibited regularly for twenty years, before retiring to the country the year before his death in 1782.

Webster’s 1913 paintings of the Azores cliffs reinvent the spectacular beauty of the natural seacoast through the scorching use of oranges, magentas, pinks, and turquoise.

Contrasting hues are applied in highly varied brushstrokes, building up the forms of the jagged rocks and churning waves.

Such fearless juxtapositions exemplify Webster’s approach, in which the breaking apart of color becomes the primary building block of composition and form.

Happy World Art Day! Share one of your favorite artists or artworks in the comments.

Seen here is Winslow Homer’s “The Gale,” which shows a fisherwoman with her baby, facing the elements, depicting man's struggle against natural forces.

Shown at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, the painting cemented Homer's reputation as one of America's preeminent painters.

In 1916 the Gallery sold Winslow Homer's “The Gale” to the Worcester Art museum for a then record price of $30,000, where it can be seen today.
