Do you want to learn more about pu’er tea 普洱茶?

Happy Tranquil Tuesdays from the farmers market mushroom table that smelled so much like raw pu’er tea that it transported me to Xishuangbanna, Yunnan and the ancient wild tea trees there.

Fall is a great time to warm up with the earthy flavors of pu’er tea.

If you want to learn more about pu’er tea, like this post and I’ll share a series on pu’er tea here on instagram.

The “China Tea” in this 1935 menu from the S.S. Normandie ocean liner is almost certainly referring to a green tea. 🍵

And the “Ceylon Tea” (tea from British Sri Lanka, was referring to black tea) ☕️

For most of human history tea from China was synonymous with green tea 🍵 with black tea ☕️ being a relatively modern entry into global tea drinking.

I write much more in depth what the 🍵 ☕️tea emojis tell us about global tea history in Smithsonian Magazine article 🔗 in bio.

detail from “A Family Being Served Tea, possibly the Carter Family” ca. 1745, Paul Mellon Collection, on display as part of the current exhibit “Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie.”

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this exhibit since the winter and was thrilled to have a chance to visit yesterday .

As many tea enthusiasts know, the history and appreciation of tea is intertwined with the enjoyment and history of porcelain, particularly porcelain teaware.

I knew this exhibit would collide with tea and tea history, was delighted to view early 18th century paintings depicting tea drinking I have never seen before, as well as examples of export tea cups that reflected Chinese teacup shapes 🍵before European tea culture added handles to teacups ☕️.

After learning from the exhibit and reflecting afterwards you could almost argue tea drinking itself came to be a type of chinoiserie in Europe and Americas.

What do you think?

When I saw the new tea bud shoots emerging from the tea 🌱 bushes as it was resting between harvest seasons high up on Alishan, it made me think of this wonderful poem by “The Plum You are Going to Eat Next Summer.”

Obviously these are tea bushes and not plum trees but as I thought of these tea leaves resting and slowly growing to be picked in spring, for tea someone will drink in the late spring or summer, the poem was fitting and I read it aloud to the tea plants 🌱.

Swipe through the images to read poem.
