De Buck Gallery The gallery supports a vibrant contemporary program of narrative, identity-based art, primarily focused on figurative painting and innovative fiber work.

Founded in 2011 by David De Buck, De Buck Gallery focuses on contemporary artists, from emerging to mid career, and is deeply committed to supporting artists’ growth through special projects and exhibitions. De Buck presents artists who are art scene leaders across their disciplines with a strong curatorial following and critical acclaim. The gallery programming engages contemporary talent such as

Shows such as “Sweet” (2017) by Devan Shimoyama and “STOP PLAYING IN MY FACE!” (2016) by Rashaad Newsome demonstrate the gallery’s cutting- edge and cross-disciplinary approach with dynamic new multimedia programming and performance. In 2019, the gallery showcased Devan Shimoyama’s work in a successful solo show, “Shh…”, and presented an exciting roster of contemporary artists in a spring group show, “Conjuring Wholeness in the Wake of Rupture.” The gallery’s 2019 programming also included “The Night Light Fell from the Sky,” a solo show of Stephen Towns’ quilt work and ‘The GAG,’ a group show curated by Devan Shimoyama. Most recently, the gallery has showcased solo exhibitions of Hiba Schahbaz, Ronald Jackson, Tahnee Lonsdale, and a group show of fiber and quilt work titled “Threaded Memory” (2020). In 2021, De Buck Gallery will launch an Artist-in-Residence program, which will invite artists to live and create at a private studio in Saint-Paul De Vence, France. The program extends artists the opportunity to exhibit work in Europe and is committed to fostering relationships with the local community, continuing Saint-Paul De Vence’s legacy as an international artist hub and home to La Maison James Baldwin.

What’s missing from Miami?

When renowned artist Juan Garaizabal was invited to create a sculpture that would capture the essence of Miami in 2016, he concluded that the city needed a more robust representation of its ties to the spirit and memory of Havana. Thus, Balcón de La Habana was born: a 69-foot-high stainless steel sculpture symbolizing the balconies of “the lost paradise.”

This monumental work stands as an icon of cultural memory and represents the profound nostalgia Havana evokes for Miami’s Cuban population.

De Buck Gallery is offering collectors the rare opportunity to acquire Balcón de La Habana, a piece that bridges history, culture, and contemporary artistry.

Juan Garaizabal’s Ever Time Gate masterfully intertwines traditional Chinese architecture with a modern interpretation, symbolizing the passage of time. The piece features a traditional door and nineteen steps, representing the past, present, and future.

Garaizabal was selected to participate in the Shanghai Sculpture Biennale through the De Buck Gallery.

Garaizabal focused on the lines of a staircase—traditionally based on the number nine in Chinese culture—that leads to a door crafted from high-strength stainless steel and welded by the artist himself.

The De Buck Gallery is offering collectors the rare opportunity to acquire a work that bridges history, culture, and contemporary artistry.

The chromatic layers in Gommaar Gilliams’ artwork speak to the multiple levels of history and symbolism he deftly interweaves.

The initial soaking of acrylic dyes suggests a foundational narrative, while the brisk impressions of oil paint bring forth vibrant, dynamic episodes. His use of color transcends mere decoration; it evokes emotion, constructs atmosphere, and implores the viewer to ponder on universal archetypes that Gilliams gracefully embeds in each piece.

✨ Juan Garaizabal’s Urban Memories series illuminates long-lost architectural elements in vacant, historically significant locations. These monumental structures are depicted at their original size and location, creating a powerful connection to the past.

Garaizabal’s notable work, Bosque de Flores, showcases a breathtaking garden of giant flowers in Valencia, Spain, exemplifying his ability to merge nature with art. With a hands-on approach, he employs techniques such as forging, carpentry, and masonry to create intricate pieces that resonate with viewers.

“The idea of each sculpture comes to me at any time, after reading and researching the past of an area and what has been great,” says Garaizabal.

As we highlight Juan Garaizabal’s extraordinary vision, we also invite sculptors worldwide to submit proposals for upcoming public art projects at De Buck Gallery.

Juan Garaizabal reclaims architectural history with his monumental public sculptures, which breathe new life into architecture.

Garaizabal’s conceptual work influences his sculptures. A substantial part of his preparatory and final work is done by hand. He uses techniques such as forging, carpentry, electricity, plasticity, and masonry to reclaim vacant and historically significant sites.

“In the ‘90s, I was part of that generation of artists who turned Berlin into an open-air art gallery. That feeling of transforming a city, and I mean the lives of the people and the way they relate to each other and
the city, intervening in the public space with installations and sculpture has marked me for life,” says Garaizabal.

Join us as we celebrate this remarkable artist who continues pushing the boundaries of contemporary art! Garaizabal’s success has inspired us at De Buck Gallery to seek more exceptional sculptors like him for our upcoming public art projects.

While many modern artists choose to disconnect from the natural world, Gilliams redefines it within his work.

His landscapes, though often abstracted, always maintain an organic heartbeat. They remind us of our environment's raw beauty and intrinsic value, pushing the observer to reconnect with the natural world. Through modern, pastoral scenes, he reimagines the very essence of nature, blending the familiar with the surreal and creating an immersive experience that transcends the surface of the canvas.

Our Story

De Buck Gallery has played a significant role in both representation and support of some of the most innovative artists of our time. Founded in 2010 by international art dealer, David De Buck, the gallery focuses on both contemporary and modern art, and is deeply committed to compelling and innovative artists’ projects and exhibitions. Located in the heart of Chelsea, and with an additional intimate viewing space in Antwerp, Belgium, De Buck presents artists who are global art scene leaders across international disciplines, movements, and eras. The gallery programming engages contemporary talent such as Rashaad Newsome, Devan Shimoyama, Tahnee Lonsdale, and Robert Lazzarini. Additionally, the modern program includes such artists as the Estate of the late Bernard Aubertin, a member of the Zero movement and best known for his red monochromatic paintings who influenced a generation with his international collaborations, concepts and ideas. David De Buck boldly focuses on the practices of minimalist mid-century masters such as Turi Simeti, Alberto Biasi and other post-war pioneers like Shozo Shimamoto, firmly rooted in tradition and historic significance. De Buck continues to dedicate the gallery’s ever expanding programming to the relevant artistic journeys of its roster of artists with fresh international exhibition programming, artistic and curatorial panels and discussions, and the creation of publication exhibition catalogues, which will create a historical overview for years to come.
