Museum for German and Austrian Art The extended Neue Galerie collection is comprised of works belonging to Ronald S.

The mission of the Neue Galerie New York is to collect, preserve, research, and exhibit fine and decorative art of Germany and Austria from the first half of the twentieth century. The museum collection covers a range of media, including painting, sculpture, works on paper, decorative arts, and photographs created in Austria and Germany between 1890 and 1940. Lauder, to the Estate of Serge Sabarsky, and to the museum itself. The Austrian material emphasizes the special relationship that existed in Vienna circa 1900 between the fine and decorative arts. Major artists in the field of fine arts include Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin, and Richard Gerstl. Decorative arts include the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) and the designs of such well-known figures as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche. The architects Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner are also represented. The collection of German art focuses on important movements of the early twentieth century. Max Beckmann, as well as Expressionist artists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde, receive special attention. The Bauhaus is well represented, with strength in the area of decorative arts. Artists of note who were affiliated with the Bauhaus include Theodor Bogler, Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, László Moholy-Nagy, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Oskar Schlemmer, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld. Holdings of Neue Sachlichkeit material include both well-known and less familiar artists, including Albert Birkle, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Karl Hubbuch, Felix Nussbaum, and Georg Scholz.

Presented in conjunction with the Neue Galerie’s “25th Anniversary Exhibition,” this film series explores the remarkable range of German cinema during the 1930s, a decade shaped by profound political, social, and cultural transformation.

Traversing genres of musical comedy, science fiction, melodrama, and romance, these films reveal shifting ideas about modernity and social belonging. Spanning the final years of the Weimar Republic and the consolidation of N**i rule, this series considers how German cinema reflected and negotiated the changing world around it. Together, the films offer a portrait of a cinematic culture caught between entertainment and ideology, innovation and conformity, escapism and the political realities of the era.

Filmbar is a movie series hosted in the relaxed atmosphere of Café Fledermaus, a beautiful bar reminiscent of early 20th century Vienna on the Lower Level of Neue Galerie New York. Filmbar tickets include a movie screening along with one complimentary drink and one snack. During the screening, you are invited to sip a glass of w**e, b**r, or non-alcoholic beverage, and enjoy a savory treat. Advance registration required.

German artist Oskar Nerlinger (1893–1969) presents an abstracted figure, yet his cap identifies him as a worker. The striped shirt, and the tiny, curved form of a bridge at the lower right suggest that he might be a sailor. But his profession is unclear. He could be a pimp or could be a petty criminal. While the figure seems anonymous, the hyphenated title of the work, Bridge-Emil, reveals his name.

The spookiest costume party on the Upper East Side returns with an after-hours bash inside the museum’s historic mansion. Hallo-Wien is coming up on Friday, October 30, 8 p.m.!

Cabaret legend Kim David Smith will cast his spell with an exclusive performance for guests, followed by our infamous costume competition. Drinks and canapés will be served by the celebrated Café Sabarsky, and the museum will be open for private viewing.

Hallo-Wien is hosted by the Neue Galerie Junior Council. All funds raised support the Annual Fund, providing invaluable funding for our educational and curatorial initiatives.

“Cat in a Child’s Arms” by Paula Modersohn-Becker measures 32.5 x 25.6 cm (12 2⁄3 x 10 in.) – some of Modersohn-Becker’s compact paintings appear to be fragments from a larger whole, but most were conceived from the outset as modest-size pictures. The cat clasped in a child’s arm bears witness to the artist’s eye for noticing striking details, which she translated into bold paintings that emanate grandeur.

This work was featured at the Neue Galerie in 2024 in the special exhibition, “Paula Modersohn-Becker: Ich bin Ich / I Am Me.”

German Expressionist artist Otto Mueller was born in 1874. He is best known for his interest in raw materials, and his focus on elongated, slender nudes. He was a co-founder of the Neue Secession and was invited to join Die Brücke (The Bridge), becoming a defining member of the group.

Completed in 1914 by Carrère & Hastings, 1048 Fifth Avenue has been designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Commission and is generally considered to be one of the most distinguished buildings ever erected on Fifth Avenue. To ensure the ongoing vitality of our institution, this summer we undertook enhancements to our building to promote sustainability and improve the visitor experience on every level. Today marks the beginning of , which was established in 1982 to bring together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to read. We wish to highlight Art Spiegelman’s “Maus.” While the author was honored in 2022 with the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters by the United States’ National Book Foundation, “Maus” is a frequent target of censorship.

A brutally moving work of art—widely hailed as the greatest graphic novel ever written—“Maus” recounts the chilling experiences of the author’s father during the Holocaust, with Jews drawn as wide-eyed mice and N**is as menacing cats. “Maus” is a haunting tale within a tale, weaving the author’s account of his tortured relationship with his aging father into an astonishing retelling of one of history’s most unspeakable tragedies. It is an unforgettable story of survival and a disarming look at the legacy of trauma.
