The Brücke artists regularly sought time away from the city to escape bourgeois constraints. In August 1909, they went to the Moritzburg Lakes near Dresden to paint friends and models relaxing in the n**e. This scene reflects that idyllic interlude and the ethos of the life reform movement, whose proponents sought respite in nature. Here, a group of bathers is depicted quickly on an unprimed canvas to capture spontaneous impressions, a technique made possible after Erich Heckel began thinning his paint with benzine or turpentine.

🎉 One week until the 48th Annual Museum Mile Festival! Join us on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 from 6 to 9 p.m. and walk along Fifth Avenue between 82nd Street and 110th Street. Enjoy free admission at participating museums that are open during the event, and experience a wide range of outdoor programming, performances, and activities presented by some of New York City’s leading cultural institutions.

Thanks so much to our neighbor, Guggenheim New York (), for their shout out. The Guggenheim will be open during the festival with free access to all galleries – and Neue Galerie fans will especially enjoy “Collection in Focus: Modern European Currents,” featuring works by Vasily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, and more.

For this year’s Museum Mile Festival, the Neue Galerie invites you to join us on 86th Street at a pop-up table located in front of the museum to explore the architecture and history of our landmark home, 1048 Fifth Avenue, and our collections of Austrian and German art and design. Please note that our galleries will be closed as our building undergoes restoration this summer.

Next up, we’re passing the baton to our wonderful neighborhood partner, Institute for the Study of the Ancient World () to learn more about their Museum Mile plans! We hear they have something fun and crafty in store...

Dolkart, Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University School of Architecture, brings you inside Neue Galerie New York’s historic building, one of the few surviving Gilded Age mansions on Fifth Avenue. Dolkart is the author of “1048 Fifth Avenue: From Mansion to Museum,” which recounts the colorful history of the building. In the process, he illuminates the social changes of New York over the course of a century.

Each week, the talented team at the Neue Galerie’s Book Store and Design Shop selects products to suit the moods of the season. We are delighted to share a range of products inspired by the museum’s latest special exhibition, “Egon Schiele: Portrait of Dr. Erwin von Graff,” on view through May 25, 2026!

The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated publication authored by Elisabeth Dutz, Chief Curator of the Graphic Art Collection at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, and designed by Bill Loccisano. Through Dr. Graff’s private diary and newly uncovered archival material, including never-before-seen photographs and documents, Dutz provides a compelling narrative of creative exchange and trust while illuminating a significant chapter in Schiele’s development. This show and its related catalogue will be of great interest to admirers and scholars of Schiele and will deepen the understanding of his oeuvre and the relationships that helped shape it.

On view through May 25! Located in the Decorative Arts gallery on the second floor of the Neue Galerie, the special presentation “Dagobert Peche: Ornamental Genius” features approximately 50 works, including objects from the museum’s holdings alongside loans from local private collections. A highlight of this show is the inclusion of objects that can be traced to the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) of America, the firm’s short-lived Fifth Avenue showroom that was open from 1922-23. The gorgeous 1920 chandelier hangs overhead right as you walk in, and the vitrines are full of decorative objects of incredible imagination and whimsy.

Final weeks! “German Masterworks from the Neue Galerie” is on view in our third floor galleries through May 25, 2026. August Macke’s “Strollers at the Lake II” (1912) is included. In this work, colors and lines break away from the objects and produce rhythmic sequences.

In 1908, artists and romantic partners Vasily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter enjoyed a sojourn in the bucolic village of Murnau in the Bavarian Alps. They were charmed by the experience and went on to paint many scenes featuring the picturesque town and its environs.

Kandinsky’s, “Murnau: Street with Women,” pictured here, dates to the initial year of their visit. This painting still shocks today with its bold brushstrokes and jarring palette–blue, green, red, and yellow all clash and vibrate together like cymbals. In the lower right corner, a trio of women gazes at the viewer as if startled during their daily stroll. The vivid colors, disassociated from representational forms, reflect Kandinsky’s response to the French Fauves, whose radical work he had seen firsthand in Paris. Kandinsky had visited the city when his own art–paintings, woodcuts, and decorative pieces–were included in the 1906 Salon d’Automne. The large scale of “Murnau: Street with Women”—over 2 by 3 feet–captures some of the awe that Kandinsky must have felt in the aftermath of his trip to Paris, as if learning to see anew.

Today we celebrate the many different forms of motherhood and the mother-child relationship. One example of this is a self-portrait by Paula Modersohn-Becker. While the artist depicted herself as pregnant, she was not indeed expecting at this time. Perhaps she envisioned herself as the mother to her paintings.
