A spirit
Gen Saratani’s TAMA is written in Japanese with the character 魂, meaning “soul.”
A soul is understood as that which dwells within a living body and governs the workings of the heart and mind. Since ancient times, it has been believed to endure beyond the body—an eternal and indestructible essence, a spirit.
It is therefore deeply meaningful that the exhibition of TAMA will be held at YAMADART in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, in the Hokuriku region—one of Japan’s most renowned lands of lacquer.
Formed through Saratani’s unique techniques using urushi, a material with a history spanning several millennia, the TAMA spheres possess a striking simplicity of form. Beyond their exquisite beauty, they hold a quiet yet powerful presence that captivates all who encounter them.
The monumental work measuring 200 cm (79 inches) in diameter is truly breathtaking.
