Excited to announce that ONX Members Marc Da Costa and Matthew Niederhauser’s machine learning installation “Parallels” won the Best in Tech award at the FilmGate Interactive Festival X! 🎉 The project was installed at both the Pérez Art Museum Miami and Frost Museum of Science over the weekend. Thanks again to the FilmGate team for hosting such an amazing gathering of XR artists and industry leaders! 🙌

"Parallels" is a site-specific machine-learning installation on a large LED wall, offering a transformative experience by decoding and reframing the world through a lens of a neural network. It creates a visceral and unmediated encounter with how artificial intelligence can discern the world, prompting reflection on technology's integration with human perception while also dreaming and reframing it in conversation with those who encounter it. ✨

We’re excited to announce a new workshop hosted in partnership with , "Signal Representation Theory for Artists," taught by Max Ardito.

Saturday, December 2 at Onassis ONX Studio, 2 - 5pm EST

Implicit in generative AI, computer software, programming languages, hardware, and data itself, lies an unspoken ideology to which we consent as both artists and consumers: that of signal representation. Signal representation theory is a field that is concerned with the representation of real-world phenomena—language, image, sound—through ideas and structures in pure mathematics. Signal representations are depictions of the world, no different than paintings, poetry, or sheet music. Likewise, they are painted, written, and composed by engineers and researchers, and the assumptions made in their depictions of sensation have a substantial impact on our collective aesthetic experience, as well as our fundamental understanding of the function of art in society.

This workshop is geared towards artists who want to develop a rudimentary understanding of signal representation theory. The workshop will focus heavily on sound, but sometimes bleed into the domains of image and language processing. Topics covered will include high, low, and latent dimensional audio signal representations, their material histories, and their relationships to various assumptions about auditory perception. A high level walkthrough of papers such as Understanding Deep Convolutional Networks (Mallat, 2016) and DDSP: Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (Engel, 2020) will also be presented. Through these topics we will attempt to demystify a number of multifaceted concepts that are implied in the design of generative AI by analyzing the ways in which engineers aesthetically and phenomenologically represent the world through different mathematical models.

Onassis ONX Studio is thrilled to be supporting 3 works at IDFA DocLab 2023 in Amsterdam, by ONX members Jiabao Li, Sister Sylvester + Deniz Tortum, and John Fitzgerald.

With the theme Phenomenal Friction, IDFA’s new media section explores friction in all its forms. The exhibition program invites audiences to look beyond technological efficiency and convenience, to explore the resistance that propels creativity forward and the conflict that reveals life’s complexities.

Squeeker: The Mouse Coach .bao.li
You’ve heard of a running coach, someone to keep your motivation high. Now, imagine this: what if the coach is a mouse? Inspired by her pet mice and the use of mice in labs, artist and technologist, Jiabao Li created Squeeker: The Mouse Coach. It’s a running program, app, and interactive installation that invites participants to run and to contemplate. How layered can the relationship among animals, humans, scientific research and technology be?

Shadowtime +
Shadowtime is a new word coined for our age, describing the feeling of occupying two irreconcilable times simultaneously. It is being stuck in a traffic jam on your way to work and realizing that the gas in your engine is the compressed mass of prehistoric creatures. It is scrolling through your phone and remembering that the earth is changing irrevocably. In Shadowtime, artists Sister Sylvester and Deniz Tortum take these temporal incompatibilities and explore them in the realm of virtual reality and simulation theory.

The Vivid Unknown +
The Vivid Unknown is an AI-driven collective viewing experience that reimagines the groundbreaking 1982 documentary ‘Koyanisqatsi’ through computer vision. This immersive projection is centered on a generative AI model trained on the archives of Godfrey Reggio, exploring the tensions between nature, humans, and technology.
