Our Preschool Prep class has been exploring the Upper West Side and getting to know some of our community helpers in our neighborhood! Our little learners have had field trips this week to a nearby post office to learn all about delivering mail and even got to tour a mail truck. They also visited the FDNY Engine 74 Firehouse to hear about fire safety and explore their fire engine, and even take turns spraying the hose!

If your little one wants to join the fun, register for summer or fall classes on our website today!

This week at CMOM we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month and draw inspiration from movement across land and sea! Young artists can explore repeated shapes, natural tones, and designs that reflect homes, journeys, and shared spaces. 🌏 🌊

Today through Fri, May 15 for all ages: Design a functional Tapa cloth tote bag featuring traditional, intricate patterns inspired by this Pacific Island cultural staple and a color palette reflecting the deep blues and greens of the ocean.

Also today through Fri, May 15 for ages 4 and younger: Masi is a pattern style used on textiles in Fiji. Press stamps into ink pads then apply the designs to a piece of fabric to create a Fijian inspired textile!

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating someone who has been at CMOM’s heart for over 40 years.

— our Founding Board Chair, champion, and one of the most hands-on supporters any institution could ask for — joined her daughter Emily Tisch Sussman on the Mother’s Day episode, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the love she shared for CMOM and the children of New York City.

As you’ll hear in the episode, Laurie grew up as the only girl in a big, loud family — and she has carried that strength, warmth, and determination into everything she does. As a mother, grandmother, and the matriarch of the Tisch family, she brings that same spirit of care and fierce dedication to the people and causes she loves — including CMOM.

And she shows up for CMOM in ways that go far beyond a title. She’s on the floor reading to kids when she visits. She travels to Rikers Island to see our outreach programs firsthand and understand their impact. She pushes us — our staff, our leadership, the vision — toward something bigger and better. And she is one of the most passionate voices behind our journey to a new home on Central Park West.

She is the embodiment of what CMOM believes: that nurturing a child’s growth, showing up for them, and never refusing to stop pushing them toward their potential is the most important work there is.

To Laurie — thank you for being our biggest cheerleader, our north star, and a reminder of what it looks like to truly show up for the people you love.

❤️ And to every mother, grandmother, caregiver, and person who shows up every day for a little one — whatever that looks like for your family — happy Mother’s Day. 💐The work you do, seen and unseen, shapes who these children become. That’s everything.👏👏👏

🎙️ Listen to Laurie’s full conversation with Emily on She Pivots — link in bio.

🌊 This week CMOM is leading creative fun through water!

Our public programs this week invite families to slow down and explore art as a moment-by-moment experience. Through water-based painting, experiment with how marks appear, change, and disappear.

🎨 Through Friday for all ages: Water & Stillness: Buddha Board Painting - Create beautiful but temporary art using a brush to form strokes of water that disappear on Buddha Boards.

🌸 Through Friday for ages four and younger: Japanese Inspired Still Life Flower Painting - Flower arrangement is a celebrated art form in Japan. Look at the flower arrangement in the middle of the table and paint what you see!
