For Dr. Robert Oxnam, driftwood was more than a medium. It also became a way of bringing fragmented parts into dialogue. Throughout his work, he was preoccupied with the relationship between the parts and the whole, searching for each sculpture’s qi, or inner spirit.

That search was also deeply personal. Dr. Oxnam lived with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a journey he shared in his widely published memoir 𝘈 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘥, a landmark personal account that broughtwider public understanding to a condition that had long been misunderstood.

He often described driftwood sculpting as ushering in his first sustained period of psychological cohesion.

In Chinese art and culture, scholar’s rocks, otherwise known as gongshi , are viewed as microcosms of the universe and used to help focus the mind and find balance. It is said that scholar’s rocks were formed naturally, despite the significant modifications made by artisans.

Robert Oxnam’s artistic philosophy and sculptures came about in a very similar way. After walking on North Fork beach in Long Island, he brought back a piece of driftwood, cleaned it, and, as Vishakha Desai, Robert’s wife put it, “instantaneously, at the same time, we both said, ‘Chinese scholar’s rock”.

It was seeing the scholar’s rock in a found driftwood that catalyzed Robert’s artistic career and, much like how ancient Chinese scholars used gonshi, Robert’s sculptures would allow him to move one step closer to finding his own qi.

BBART (芭莎艺术), Harper’s Bazaar China’s contemporary art platform! This marks her first artist award in recognition of her practice across fine art, fashion, and design. Congrats Leah! 🎉

Leah Ying Lin is a New York-based multidisciplinary artist creating kinetic sculptural works through metallic ceramics, 3D-printed metal, creative coding, and performance. Her practice evokes living sculptures in motion, where cosmic mythologies, cutting-edge technology, and human longing converge.

“Once I get a promising piece back to my studio, I do not think of myself as an “artist” working on an “object” but rather I experience a dynamic partnership with the driftwood. At every step of the way—finding the ideal balance point, attaching the base to the surface, gently cleaning the wood and removing the pulp, applying organic milk paints to the surface and then using fine sandpaper to reveal the underlying structure, and finally burnishing the piece using natural waxes—I am working collaboratively with the wood. My mantra is, do what Nature tells you to do, and do nothing against Nature’s intent.” - Robert Oxnam

“Despite the heavy anthropological baggage, stylistic aspects of the art inevitably take center-stage and we experience a primer of sorts into varieties of abstraction over the past sixty-plus years, starting with Ting’s Abstract Expressionism.”

In a recent 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘭𝘺𝘯 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘭 article, William Corwin highlights twelve diasporic artists from the ongoing series, 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘴 𝘐𝘵? The exhibition, hosted by The Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation and curated by Lilly Wei, comments on the artists’ collective contribution to the art history scene, all the while challenging viewers to question their own perception of the work.

Please join us for a conversation between Dr. Susan Beningson, independent curator, and Dr. Vishakha Desai, President emerita Asia Society, at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, June 17! This discussion will explore the life and artistic practice of Robert Oxnam, as well as the works currently on view in our exhibition 𝙍𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙩 𝙊𝙭𝙣𝙖𝙢: 𝙎𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙌𝙞, which features two distinct bodies of work: the driftwood sculptures, for which he became best known, and his photographic works.
