“Atkins’ 16-minute ‘Pianowork 2’ plunges deep into the so-called uncanny valley where simulations come close to perfect realism and seem weirder for it. Its companion, an 80-minute projection called ‘Sorcerer’
seems like a straightforward record of a theatrical piece [with] dialogue that sounds like the almost random chatter of friends, transcribed direct from life.

Without going digital, this results in some of the same tensions as ‘Pianowork 2’. Maybe the uncanny valley is where human culture likes to hang out.” — reviews Ed Atkins’ new works in today’s issue of .

“Sorcerer” and “Pianowork 2” are on view at 530 West 21st Street until January 6, 2024.

The United States premiere of Ian Cheng’s “BOB” opens this week on January 31 from 6-8pm at Gladstone’s 21st Street location. Taking the form of a branching serpent, BOB’s body, mind, and personality will evolve over the course of its display as stimuli from both AI models and gallery-goers alike influence its actions and beliefs. Viewers are invited to send their own stimuli and “parental forces” to BOB through BOB Shrine, an iOS app available worldwide. The exhibition will be on view through March 23; please visit https://bobs.ai/ for more details about downloading the app.
