What’s On: Collecting Without a Center – Afghan Visual Arts & History (AVAH)

How can the vast and dispersed Afghan artistic diaspora be connected into a meaningful canon without a single geographic, national, or institutional center?

Join us for an evening of dialogue, film, and community with AVAH – Afghan Visual Arts & History members Parwana Haydar, Barry Sadid, and Moshtari Hilal, a collective of artists and cultural practitioners dedicated to cataloging and understanding Afghan visual culture and history. Moderated by Leeza Ahmady, director and curator of Asia Contemporary Art Forum and Week, they will explore the nuances of art-making, curation, and collecting—“not as a means of preserving a singular nation-state narrative, but as a way to embrace the pluralities of our stories.”

Sunday, March 9th, 2025 | 4:00 – 8:00 PM
Join us for a promising evening with conversation, films, food—and even a curious ghost!

We celebrate ACAW Field Meeting 2014 and 2019 presenter, artist Burcak Bingol, on recently exhibiting her new collection of ceramics at Tate St Ives, UK.
‘Minor Vibrations on Earth’ showcases the outcome of her 2022 residency in St Ives; in this exhibition we see the combination of traditional ceramic making, influenced by her Turkish background, combined with a more modern approach to style and form.

‘Bingöl’s work embraces the mistakes and accidents that occur during the process of making. The action of rebuilding from these accidents becomes a metaphor for the continued disintegration and reconstruction of cultural traditions and heritage. Evoking this feeling of transformation, her installation at Tate St Ives resembles a kiln during the firing process, full of fragile clay objects which appear broken, melting or incomplete.’ Tate St Ives Press Release Burçak Bingöl: Minor Vibrations on Earth, October 2022.

The exhibition is curated by Anne Barlow, Director of Tate St Ives, with Giles Jackson, Assistant Curator.

We wish everyone a happy new year of the Rabbit with an image by artist Xiao Kegang who is presenting his first solo exhibition “Detour” at Eli Klein Gallery in New York.

“Xiao Kegang’s practice has centered around the observation of the world from different perspectives and principles, or “cognitive alternatives.” A half-face of an owl could resemble an ionic column. A left foot could invoke a right-leaning shrub. These paintings are visually harmonic, but cognitively puzzling. Xiao Kegang expects viewers to tour through his canvas, identifying their own objects of interest.” Eli Klein Gallery Press-Release. 2023
