"William Powhida and Jennifer Dalton Look at Housing in New York" on Blouin Artinfo by Rachel Corbett

Just as New York City’s economy can be measured by the so-called “Pizza Principle” — wherein a slice consistently costs about the same as a subway ride — there’s a similar correlation between the art and housing markets, says economics writer Felix Salmon. “The price of a really nice big apartment on Park Avenue is always the same as the price of a really nice Rothko,” he said during a talk hosted earlier this week by artists William Powhida and Jennifer Dalton.

The artists are hosting a series of public events that investigate "luxury" and "affordable" housing in New York.

PREMIERE at Moving Image New York

Jennifer Dalton "New Trick" by Winkleman Gallery

New Trick is a video work chronicling Dalton’s attempt over the course of one year to learn to execute a standing backflip. A martial-arts personal trainer she knows once remarked in passing that he could teach anyone to do a standing backflip in one year. Dalton stewed for months over his off-hand boast before deciding she had to take him up on it. The idea struck her as a way out of a comfort zone that she had settled into as an artist and as a person. New Trick is a three-channel installation with a sequence of short video segments of weekly training sessions with the trainer as Dalton gets closer and closer to her goal and either succeeds or fails at it.
