“Chinoise” sculpture, 1913, by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875–1942)

Born into immense privilege as the daughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney charted an unconventional path for a woman of her time by pursuing a career as a sculptor. She became one of the foremost patrons of American art in the early twentieth century, her dedication to supporting artists eventually leading to the founding of the Whitney Museum, while her own commissions include the Titanic Memorial in Washington, D.C., a World War I memorial in Brittany, and a monument to Buffalo Bill in Wyoming.

Among her earliest achievements is this marvelous gilded plaster self-portrait, “Chinoise” (1913). This art nouveau work is the original plaster she gilded by hand. In 1914, she had two bronzes and one marble made from the piece — the marble now resides in the Whitney Museum’s permanent collection.

We were recently reunited with this beautiful sculpture of Gertrude after she spent 3 weeks at the guilder where she was repaired, cleaned, and, waxed. We missed her very much but are glad to see that she is looking radiant as ever.

We invite you to marvel at her beauty yourself in our booth on the 10th floor of the !

‘Untitled’, oil on canvas, Robert Indiana, 1959

Sculptor, painter and printmaker Robert Indiana, has been a preeminent figure in American art since the 1960s. 5 years before his iconic LOVE image was created, he painted this ‘Untitled’ work.

Two small sketches for ‘Untitled’ appear in Robert Indiana’s journal entry dated March 7, 1959 (slide 2), accompanied by a note that he began the work on “too-dry linen” he had received for free from an art supply store. Unable to afford canvas at the time, Indiana was primarily working on Homasote and plywood, making this one of his earliest paintings on canvas.

‘Untitled’ continues his exploration of the avocado seed motif and relates closely to his mural Stavrosis (1958, slide 3), in which he depicts the Crucifixion; Indiana employed botanical forms to represent Christ and the two thieves. The mirrored avocado seed shapes in ‘Untitled’ can be understood as a horizontal reorientation of the form used to depict the Good Thief in Stavrosis.

Come see this unique early work from iconic American artist Robert Indiana in our booth at the New York Design Center!

Pair of Arne Jacobsen Pot Chairs

Originally designed for the Copenhagen SAS Royal Hotel in 1960, The Pot chair is an example of Arne Jacobsen’s constant effort to create simpler designs with a clear-cut form. The Pot was in use in several places around the hotel, including in the spectacular conservatory with its plush carpets and two-storey wall-mounted glass showcases with hanging orchids.

Manufactured by Fritz Hansen, the Pot’s design was based on a novel technological method, in which the furniture was shaped in a hard foam material and subsequently padded and upholstered. The groundbreaking method liberated Arne Jacobsen from the limitations of more traditional materials and gave him free hands to shape the form. The clear articulation of the two parts of the construction – the embracing seat shell and the supporting steel frame – exemplifies the rationalization of form and expression that Arne Jacobsen consistently sought in his design.

In 1959, the year before the official opening of the hotel, the Pot was launched by furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen but was taken out of production shortly after. It was relaunched in 2018. These original chairs from the mid-century period have been reupholstered in saddle tan leather to resemble the pristine, newly constructed chairs that adorned the SAS Royal.

Come try out these wonderful chairs in our booth at the New York Design Center!

Pan of Rohallion
Frederick William MacMonnies (1863–1937)

Frederick William MacMonnies was one of America’s foremost Beaux-Arts sculptors, celebrated for his dynamic compositions and technical mastery of the human form. Born in 1863 in Brooklyn Heights, he began his artistic training in Manhattan before becoming an apprentice to the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. MacMonnies continued his studies at the Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, and Cooper Union, later moving to Paris in 1884 to attend the Académie Colarossi and ultimately the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts.

He rose to international prominence in the late 19th century with major public commissions, including the monumental Barge of State for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the widely debated Bacchante and Infant Faun. A master of allegorical and mythological subjects, MacMonnies remained devoted to the Beaux-Arts tradition throughout his career, culminating in his monumental Marne Battle Monument, gifted to France in 1924.

Pan of Rohallion, conceived in 1890, exemplifies MacMonnies’ appreciation of classical mythology and his fluid, naturalistic modeling. The figure of Pan reflects the sculptor’s deep engagement with movement and form. This bronze, bearing a rich brown patina, is inscribed “Frederick MacMonnies” and stamped “H. Rouard. Fondeur,” referencing the esteemed Parisian foundry.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, New Jersey, acquired circa 1995.

Necklace pendants by Harry Bertoia, 1940s, 1950s, 2015.

In the 1940s, The famous furniture designer and sculptor Harry Bertoia, known for his iconic functional wire pieces for knoll and his imaginative metal sculptures, toyed with the idea of creating a complete line of jewelry—but it never materialized.

However, early in his career, Bertoia studied at Cranbrook University from 1937-1943. With the war-time need for metal supplies, Bertoia turned his creative energy to projects that utilized less metal: jewelry. He shared his hand-crafted jewelry with his friends at Cranbrook and even made wedding rings for artist and designer Ray Eames, among other peers. The organic shapes and fine detail of the jewelry later evolved into the early sculpture forms.

In the 1970s, Bertoia returned briefly to jewelry design at Bertoia Studios, his designs were brought to life in 2015 by his daughter Celia Bertoia in limited editions of 5, 50 and 100, respectively.
