Berthot refers to his work as “experiential”, or routed in experience, both his abstract work of the 1960’s and 1970’s as well as his recent work. Ultimately Berthot’s work is as much about place as it is about presence.

"I could not figure out how many sections and overlays Lewis ending up using for the acrylic on paper “Intersection Post Road and Compo Road” (2015-19). He even went so far as to the bisect the painting vertically, make a gap between the two sections, and add third section underneath, joining them. He painted the space between the two sheets a grayish green, suggesting a telephone pole. By working this way, Lewis reminds us that painting and our view of reality are things we construct. He hides neither his decisions nor his dissatisfactions; he is willing to leave one part of a section of paper he adhered to the surface unpainted." - John Yau on Stanley Lewis for Hyperalleric, 2022 ⁠

On Thursday, January 10th, 2013 Betty Cuningham Gallery opened a group exhibition titled PAINT at its Chelsea gallery!

"In this exhibition the single common element is PAINT and from that point forward each artist delivers his or her own distinct vocabulary... Like music, the language of painting crosses national borders, is shared by common perception and challenges us to follow the route being paved by each artist."
