From 1935 to 1942, produced works that mark him as a pioneer of American surrealism. ‘Old Man Holding Child’ is an excellent example of his work in the genre. While the individual components of the composition are readily identifiable, their mode of presentation is disjunctive and disquieting.

The figural group appears to be a carved wood statue, set against a background of land, sea, and sky. While the subject matter and the draped clothing of the elder male suggest an ancient or biblical narrative, the child clucthes a blue ball, a distinctly contemporary attribute. As Marinko himself took pains to explain, the meaning of any of his work is in the intersection of his subconcious and the perceptions of the viewer.

left Illinois for New York City to study at Pratt Institute of Brooklyn with $300 borrowed from her mother. After graduating in 1901, she split her time between teaching and traveling the world, spending time in locales such as Venice, Madrid, Paris, Egypt, Algiers, and Constantinople. She also explored the American Southwest, the Canadian Northwest, and the art colonies of New England.

Thank you to Max Norman and the New York Times for a wonderful article on Cornelia Foss and her "Little Reds," currently on view at Hirschl & Adler (through December 12).

About the show, Norman writes:

“These paintings vibrated with unnerving, even chaotic energy, set in an uncanny world that was equal parts nightmare and fable. The buoyant mood at the opening — visitors streamed by to congratulate Ms. Foss or pose for pictures — contrasted sharply with the ominous motif in the paintings: a wolf stalking the smudged red cape and white stockings of a small girl through forest and field.”

While was the painter and Dora Zaslavsky, his wife, was the musician, music was deeply important to the artist. In 1968, Koch told an interviewer for an oral history at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, “I can’t live without music. Emotionally, it’s perhaps more important than any other art form.”

‘The Concert’ exemplifies Koch’s sentiment. The couple’s apartment on the Upper West Side was a sort of salon space, ever filled with friends, art, music, and food and drink. This picture offers a glimpse into one such gathering, an intimate concert, which takes place just outside of the frame.

‘The Concert’ is currently on view at Hirschl & Adler.

was one of the most popular and prolific of the American sculptors working in Rome in the 19th century. While much of his success came from the tasteful portrait busts in the classical mode that he modeled for wealthy travelers on the Grand Tour, Ives was known to critics and the public for his ideal pieces modeled on literary or mythological sources.
