BIG BLING

Shining a light on this incredible work by Martin Puryear in recognition of . His 40-foot tall masterpiece titled BIG BLING debuted in in 2016 and traveled Philadelphia and . It was his largest public art piece to date. The curved tower is made of chainlink fencing and plywood and is topped with a shackle gilded in 22-karat gold leaf.

Through a minimalist lens, the artist adopts symbols associated with histories of freedom and enslavement. His work is rooted in the craft techniques of different communities which serves to confront contemporary political and social issues effectively merging with elegant craftsmanship. Brooke Kamin Rapaport stated, “For more than five decades, Puryear has created a body of work distinguished by a complex visual vocabulary and deeply-considered meaning.”

In 2019, Puryear represented the US at the 58th Venice Biennale. He was just the second African American artist to be awarded the role. He also represent the US in the 1988 Sao Paulo Biennale.

LUCKY🐇

Celebrating Lunar New Year with a very fitting work by the Chinese artist (born 1958).

Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads features large bronze statues of the twelve astrological signs. The work draws inspiration from the fountain clock at with sculptures designed by Italian painter during the China. 🇨🇳

In the Chinese culture, the rabbit is known to be the luckiest out of all the twelve animals. It symbolizes mercy, elegance, and beauty. People who are born in the year of the rabbit are calm and peaceful.

May your year be lucky and peaceful.

OPENING CREDITS🎊

So happy to have been invited back this year as guest curator for Kathryn Markel at her super charming eponymous gallery in Bridgehampton. Once an old parrish, years ago the entire building was picked up and moved across the street to its current location, rickety old wide plank floor boards and all. I was immediately drawn to it’s history and authenticity–great for intimate conversations around art! We had an amazing turnout at the opening with almost all the artists present👏.

::The show was a result of thinking about the painful realities of the Ukrainian war, and the poignant idea of reclamation - reclaiming something lost, stolen, or forgotten, and returning it to a former or better state. It is evocative of not just notions of loss but also offers a semblance of hope in the current context of nonsensical atrocities. As such, the works can be viewed as subtle acts of bravery by each artist. The works present a unique interpretation of the idea of reclamation whether it refers to one’s freedom, an ancestral homeland, childhood or mother nature. 🇺🇦A portion of the proceeds will benefit Direct Relief to provide medical aid to Ukraine.🇺🇦

ART TODAY🎯🎯🎯
The Whitney Biennial’s 80th edition opened this week and is a fascinating survey of contemporary art today in America. As I toured the museum I found it refreshing to see such a well curated selection of art together under one roof as well as exhilarating to see how artists have responded to these most difficult of times. 🎯 (get a glimpse of my faves in the REEL 👆)

Despite a year delay and other obstacles no doubt, I thought the curators and captured the cultural zeitgeist to present a poignant and pithy showcase of newcomers and veterans alike.🙌🙌🙌 I especially loved the fact they added their own symbol to succinctly sum up their vibe: )( , emphasizing the importance of openness and inclusion as the driving concepts of their curation.

the title, ‘QUIET AS IT’S KEPT’, a phrase borrowed from Toni Morrison aptly captured the vibe of the show speaking to the unspoken dark realities of recent years. 😶‍🌫️🌪

ART FOR UKRAINE 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Next month, in an effort to raise funds for Ukraine medical relief, the indomitable will recreate her epic meditational piece originally performed at the Museum of Modern Art titled, ‘The Artist is Present’ (2010).

During Abramovic’s original legendary performance, she silently sat in a chair while museum visitors took turns sitting across from her (including yours truly) for eight hours a day. The performance lasted nearly three months, for a total of 716- and a-half hours. The experience, for me at least, was intense, raw and deeply moving. 🕉

The benefit performance will be held at on April 16. The lucky winner will not only experience transcendence with a master and be part of an historical moment but also have the experience documented by renowned photographer, , who painstakingly shot every sitting of Abramovic’s first performance.
