SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!

Yesterday, I enjoyed a delightful lunch with the talented and compassionate artist ZHENYA GERSHMAN! She is an internationally renowned painter, art historian, educator, and an inspiring mom. Can’t wait to see her new work!

ZHENYA GERSHMAN is known for her dramatic monumental portraits. Born in Eastern Europe, she held her first solo exhibition in St. Petersburg at age fourteen. She was selected as a subject of the TV Documentary Film Our Generation, a project dedicated to searching for the five most talented teenagers in Russia, showing hope for the cultural future of the country. The youngest student to be admitted to Otis Art Institute, Zhenya graduated with Honors and later received her Masters of Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design. Today, Zhenya’s work is featured in preeminent private and public collections, such as Donald Simon, Richard Weisman, and Arte Al Limite Museum in Santiago, Chile. She participates in important international exhibitions including Art Aspen, Art Miami, and Art Chicago. She was selected to create iconic portraits of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan for the MusiCares GRAMMY Foundation.

Clifford’s work is rich with emotion and depth, inviting viewers to embark on their own journeys. While her creative process may appear chaotic and fast-paced, it ultimately gives rise to artworks that are vibrant with life, light, and a serene visual calmness. Clifford’s art is deeply rooted in her past experiences, intricately woven with the emotions she experiences in the present. Painting serves as her medium for expressing these complex feelings, which is why she often describes her pieces as her stories or songs. The colors she employs are never random; they stem from specific visual inspirations and are imbued with intentional depth and tone. Her work navigates between a profound heaviness and a soft, feminine quality. Music significantly influences her creative process, enhancing the emotional resonance of her paintings. “I like to think of my work as existing in a space between chaos and calm, reflecting the duality of the human experience.”

Suzanne Unrein is a California native and a current New Yorker by way of Florida.

Characterized by the fervent energy of gestural mark making and wide swaths of vibrant, unnatural colors, these recent paintings are lyrical forms of civilized society immersed in a wilder existence. Joy, savagery and carnal sensuality that sometimes references violence, are expressed with a contemporary working of paint to create complex, emotional compositions by way of the subconscious rather than analytical mind.

Spotlight on this trailblazing woman!

Helen McNicoll (1879-1915)

Fell in love with one of Canada’s top female impressionist artists from the late 1800s/ early 1900s at the Musee des Beaux-Arts du Quebec. ‘Helen McNicoll; An Impressionist Journey’ is the first Quebec retrospective of her work in a century!

I admire how she used color and light to create really beautiful dreamlike scenes - her subjects were predominantly women and children depicted in lush landscapes and in everyday life. She was born into a wealthy Canadian family, became deaf at the age of two after catching scarlet fever, she traveled and studied abroad, she spent most of her adult life painting and traveling with fellow painter Dorthea Sharp. She is known for introducing impressionism to Canada when it was still relatively unknown. An impressive woman who accomplished so much in a career that lasted only a decade.
