Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950)
Twelve Scenes of Tokyo: Hirakawa Bridge, 1929

Between 1926 and 1929 Yoshida produced this series, Twelve Views of Tokyo (which would ultimately include two variants of the Sumida River composition, bringing the total to 15.)

Even four years into producing woodblock prints independently, Yoshida and his printers were still very experimental and innovative: for this evocative nocturne the three blocks used for the sky were shifted slightly while printing to capture the changing clouds on a moonlit evening.

Kikugawa Eizan (1787-1867)
Fashionable Ide Yamabuki, ca. 1809-14

Although the title identifies the subject as a view of fashionable ladies and blooming yamabuki (mountain roses) flourishing along the banks of the Ide River, idiosyncratic elements to their stylish ensembles, such as wearing male courtier caps, indicate this is a mitate (parody).

The combination of the central figure on horseback accompanied by attendants carrying male accoutrements including shoes, a sword, and a rolled up tent, suggest the poet Ariwara no Narihira (825-880 AD) and his episode known as Azuma kudari (journey to the East) during a period of disillusionment as retold in the Tale of Ise (Ise Monagatari).
