This is a holographic art piece I created for an exhibition at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway titled: Lighting Shadows - the women of Afghanistan. I'm also a curator of the show. The show ran from February 14 - March 8, 2026. This piece expresses the reality of a vibrant woman trapped inside her home as a defacto prisoner. Educated women, and all other women, are currently marginalized by the Taliban. They can't leave their homes without the permission of a man, nor can they pursue a professional carreer. Instead, they sit inside and embroider. This piece is intended to express the hopelessness of their situation. Their light has dimmed and the mullions of their windows are like the bars of a jail. I chose to present a woman wearing a chador embroidering as she looks out of her window robbed of hope. Her image is seen in a monochromatic red to express the blood that has been shed by these women. It also conveys the winnowing from the full spectrum and vibrancy of life to the desperation of being reduced to chattel. In Afghanistan, women have become shadows.
