Happy birthday to Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, born this day in 1827!

Best known for his ethnographic sculptures, Cordier aimed to represent the beauty of the various human races. This goal is realized in many of his busts, including “A Sudanese in Algerian Costume” (1857, Dahesh Museum of Art), and “Woman from the French Colonies” (1861, Metropolitan Museum of Art).

Happy Birthday to Everiste Luminais!

Luminais began his career as a genre painter of contemporary hunting and peasant scenes set in his native Brittany and later added a historical dimension to these works, raising them to the level of history painting, which the French Academy esteemed the highest category of subject matter.

Our Story

Chartered in 1987, the Dahesh Museum of Art is the only institution in the United States devoted to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting works by Europe's academically-trained artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Museum's core collection originated with Dr. Dahesh (tr. The Dahesh Museum of Art continues to organize exhibitions and loan major artworks to other museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Museum will be moving soon to its newly acquired home once its renovation has been completed. It is also one of the finest museum gift shops in New York City. Please note: There are no art exhibitions on view at this location
