We are so thrilled to have contributed 21 photos, taken by five American photographers, to the Hermitage Museum's growing Contemporary Art Collection.

All photos belong to the genre of street photography that is characterized by the aesthetic of everyday life.

Prof. Mikhail Piotrovsky stressed the importance of the gift from the Hermitage Museum Foundation (USA):
“This is a very important addition to our collection, and besides, it is important that in a situation where there are hardly any ties with America, we are receiving gifts from the United States. I very much hope that perhaps our links and exchanges with the USA will be the first thing to be restored when relations between our countries improve. This is therefore a very significant and symbolic gift.”

This phenomenal object is at the Hermitage, and is a super-rare Christian Palestinian 18th century depiction of the Theophany on the skull of a crocodile.

Today, in Russia, and in the Orthodox world, one celebrates the Theophany (from the Greek: theos/God phanein/appear). This is the moment when Christ asks Saint John the Baptist to baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan. St John responds saying that he is not worthy of tying up Christ’s sandals, let alone baptizing Him (the source of all baptisms). Christ responds saying : Do as I say!

Have you visited the Morozov Collection Exhibition yet ?

The Morozov Collection, one of Russia’s greatest art collections, is on display in every gallery in the ’The Foundation Louis Vuitton' in Paris and features 200 works from the brothers Ivan and Mikhail Morozov, online films and a 520-page catalogue. The exhibition includes works by artists such as Monet, Gaguguin, Van Gogh, and Renoir.

It is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit, well worth the trip.

We are excited the Collection is finally back after being postponed three times due to Covid restrictions. Let us know your first impressions if you paid a visit! ✨

The Morozov Collection: Icons Of Modern Art will be displayed at the Louis Vuitton Foundation until February 22, 2022.

Glasstress. Window to the Future.

Now on display at the State Hermitage until October 31, 2021.

The display features more than 500 works created in glass by contemporary artists on the Venetian island of Murano. Artists from different countries and generations reflect in their creations on current social processes, historical events, personal experience, the characteristics and philosophy of what was for many of them a new material.

Time to add to your reading list! 📖

Mikhail Piotrovsky’s book ‘Islamic Art in Russia’ has come out in English!

The book describes works and collections of Islamic art in historical Russia and analyzes the Russian experience of its study. Those chapters frame discussions of the distinctive qualities of the art of Islam based chiefly on the example of collections in Russia’s museums.

We can’t wait to indulge!

Today is the celebration of one of the most famous and worshipped icons- the Mother of God Hodegetria of Smolensk. One of the most important copies of this icon is held at the Hermitage, acquired in 1959.

Soldiers would make their vows of loyalty before this icon before setting off to battle. According to legend, the very earliest icon of this type was painted by Saint Luke himself, during the lifetime of the Holy Virgin Mary.

There are various depictions of the Hodegetria but the most ceremonial of these is usually known as the Virgin of Smolensk.
