MUS 2006, high school graduation. Two decades on I’m still the nerd I always have been. My senior quote seems at odds with my professional calling, but I think of it more and more frequently: “Surely there is a lesson for us all here today; a lesson of change, of change which is written upon humanity as it is upon material structure, whether of wood or stone; a lesson of decay; a lesson of the limit of human effort; a lesson of the advancing tide of events as time rolls on its irresistable march, sweeping away life, monuments and edifices - all things but the essence of good.” -Douglas Walworth. We have tragically lost a number of our classmates through the years, most recently Alex Rainer. Some of my earliest and best memories are hanging at the pool in the Summer with the Rainer boys and the Dillons. I hadn’t seen Alex in years and years, but I can still hear his laugh clear as day. A GoFundMe has been set up in support of his family, and I encourage giving to it - and remembering the essence of good that Alex had so much of in him.

One of Memphis’s most significant religious landmarks is under threat of demolition.
I passed this mysterious red-brick Byzantine building with its striking Diocletian window countless times growing up. Designed by Jones & Furbinger and built in 1916, the Children of Israel Synagogue is more than just an architectural gem. It is a testament to moral courage.

Its first rabbi, William Fineshriber, spoke out against the Ku Klux Klan and the lynching of Ell Persons in 1917. His congregation issued a public condemnation, taking a stand for justice at a time when doing so came with real danger. This building holds that legacy.

Today, under the ownership of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, the structure has been allowed to fall into disrepair and is now slated for demolition as part of a $310 million Midtown expansion.

With the loss of so much of Memphis’s historic landscape, the preservation of this monument and its adaptation is of paramount importance. The city cannot afford to lose spaces like this—not just because of their beauty, but because they carry in their walls a rare legacy of courage and moral fortitude. Preserving this building means safeguarding a part of Memphis’s conscience.

Please take one minute of your day to sign the petition to save it.

There are seascapes, and then there are pictures that make you smell and hear the sea: this is one of the latter. Painted by Frederick Judd Waugh in 1909, the rush of these waves represent the heights of the artist following his return to America the previous year. A student of Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and under Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, Waugh gave life to water like few before or since.

In 2016, ten years ago I struck up a conversation with a towering Frenchman at an lecture reception. Within minutes it was clear to me what depth and breadth this man had. In the decade following, Valentin Goux has become one of the people I most admire. With gratitude for you and and all of the other outstanding people you’ve brought into my life, bon anniversaire, to many decades more, and I am honored to celebrate ‘s achievements with you next month at the Arthur Ross Awards.

An early Klismos discovery : Cypriot limestone head of a man, circa 525-500 BC

For as far back as I can remember, I have been drawn to the old, venerable, and lost. Growing up, I thought I would become a fedora-wearing, bullwhip-wielding archaeologist. On rare occasions along my chosen path, I do sometimes get to wear that hat and have the opportunity to bring things out of obscurity into the light.

One of my proudest early discoveries as an art dealer was this late 6th century BC Cypro-Archaic votive head. I’m no great admirer of Archaic art: give me the severe Hellenic any day of the week. But this sculpture’s earnest expression, handsome face and Persian curly beard mark it as one of the most beautiful surviving works of the period.

Favorite moments from the New York Public Library. The water fountain never fails to stop me dead in my tracks, but I hadn’t ever fully appreciated the stately Doric rosso antico (?) door surround in the Salomon Room until this week. A perfect primer for listening to the master of marble and at the last night. Thank you to .lyden and for a fantastic evening
