Marilyn Monroe was born 100 years ago this week!❤️
Before there was Karen and Ivy, Marilyn’s life first came to Broadway in MARILYN: AN AMERICAN FABLE. Following a tumultuous rehearsal and preview period, MARILYN opened on October 20th, 1983 at the Minskoff Theatre, starring Alyson Reed (best known for the A CHORUS LINE and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL movies) as Marilyn Monroe and directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega, who was later replaced by Thommie Walsh and Baayork Lee. MARILYN: AN AMERICAN FABLE ran for 34 previews and 17 performances on Broadway.

Did you know that when ON THE TOWN came to Broadway in 1944, it was one of the earliest book musicals to have an Asian-American actress in a featured role? Additionally, the script didn’t specifically call for it, but the creatives cast a racially integrated ensemble to look authentically like NYC.🗽

“Black sailors and soldiers stood on stage alongside their white counterparts, and mixed-race couples joyously danced together—all in the midst of World War II, when the real American military was contentiously segregated and the government operated racial internment camps.” In fact, the actress playing Ivy Smith, Sono Osato’s father had been arrested in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor as an “alien enemy” for being Japanese living in America. This bold casting and risk taken by the production is often overlooked - it carried a political message that was performed but not otherwise articulated.
