One of our favorite photographers of all time, Gordon Parks (gordonparksfoundation), captured Malcolm X at a rally in Chicago in 1963. Here, Malcolm turns toward the crowd with his hand raised in greeting—a moment of connection and presence, preserved through Parks’s remarkable eye.

Gordon Parks: Voices in the Mirror
Opening today, 6–8 PM
Jack Shainman Gallery
46 Lafayette Street, New York City

If you’re in New York, be sure to visit the exhibition. You can also book a tour at the Shabazz Center for a deeper look into the lives and legacies of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz.

Nolan Wells’ family deserves answers not assumptions, not unanswered questions and not a conclusion that asks them to accept uncertainty as closure.

Nolan was only 18 years old. A grand jury declined to bring charges in connection with his death, stating that the circumstances were “consistent with drowning.” Yet both the state medical examiner and the independent pathologist hired by his family listed his cause and manner of death as undetermined.

“Consistent with” is not the same as confirmed.

History is not as far behind us as we would like to believe. Sometimes it unfolds in real time, right in front of us, as another Black family is forced to fight for transparency and the truth about what happened to their child.

Nolan’s life mattered. His family’s questions matter. They deserve a full accounting of what happened to their son.

We stand with the family of Nolan Wells in their continued pursuit of truth, transparency and accountability.

Spike Lee’s 1992 epic Malcolm X is one of the greatest biographical films in cinema history. It reshaped how Black historical narratives are portrayed on screen, especially in Hollywood. It also achieved monumental status as the first non-documentary film ever permitted to shoot in Mecca.

40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks successfully petitioned Saudi Arabia’s highest religious authorities to allow a second-unit crew to film the Hajj pilgrimage a privilege never before granted to a non-documentary film.

This masterpiece stands as a clear example of Hollywood’s history of systemic bias. Historians point to Denzel’s 1993 Best Actor loss as one of the greatest Oscar robberies of all time.

Do you agree?

Board Chair Dr. joined award-winning film maker for an intimate conversation celebrating the release of her new book, Malcolm in the Desert.

Together, they explored the dimensions of Malcolm X’s legacy that history too often overlooks—his profound spiritual and humanitarian transformation during his final pilgrimage to Mecca, and how he returned home further committed to advancing a broader vision of human dignity, justice, and our shared humanity before his life was tragically cut short.

More than a historical account, Malcolm in the Desert invites readers to reflect on their own journey of growth, purpose, and transformation.

It was a sold-out evening, the book-signing line stretched on, and the response was overwhelmingly inspiring.

Join the conversation. Read the book. Continue the journey.

“When our children are in the classrooms...”

has never stopped using her voice to remind us that education is liberation. Every child deserves to learn about Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, King Tut, and the countless leaders whose stories have shaped our world.

History is not just something we remember. It is something we pass on.

Join Dr. and for an intimate conversation on July 8 at Joe’s Pub as they discuss Malcolm in the Desert: Wisdom from the Spiritual Transformation of Malcolm X

This past weekend at Dr. and Dr. sat down with Lanny Smith .smith23 , Founder and CEO of Black, for a conversation that stayed with us long after it ended. Focused around legacy, purpose, courage, and what it truly means to carry the work forward.

As daughters of two of the most transformative figures in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Shabazz and Dr. King offered a powerful reminder: legacy isn’t something we simply inherit. It’s something we choose, every day, through how we serve, how we show up, and how we treat one another.

May this conversation inspire us to lead with integrity, speak with conviction, and keep doing the unfinished work of building a world rooted in justice and compassion.
