The Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center (The Shabazz Center) honors the lives and legacies of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and Dr. Betty Shabazz. The Shabazz Center provides cultural, educational, and social programs designed to heighten awareness and further the cause of human rights globally. ustice through a critical engagement with local, national and global issues that impacted the lives of people of African descent and other groups seeking self determination. In this spirit the Shabazz Center is committed to advancing this rich and relevant legacy of social change by empowering a new generation through an ongoing programmatic mission focused on current challenges and opportunities by way of leadership development, artistic engagement, economic empowerment, historical literacy and civic engagement to foster a more just world.

Spike Lee’s 1992 epic Malcolm X is one of the greatest biographical films in cinema history. It reshaped how Black historical narratives are portrayed on screen, especially in Hollywood. It also achieved monumental status as the first non-documentary film ever permitted to shoot in Mecca.

40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks successfully petitioned Saudi Arabia’s highest religious authorities to allow a second-unit crew to film the Hajj pilgrimage a privilege never before granted to a non-documentary film.

This masterpiece stands as a clear example of Hollywood’s history of systemic bias. Historians point to Denzel’s 1993 Best Actor loss as one of the greatest Oscar robberies of all time.

This past weekend at Dr. and Dr. sat down with Lanny Smith .smith23 , Founder and CEO of Black, for a conversation that stayed with us long after it ended. Focused around legacy, purpose, courage, and what it truly means to carry the work forward.

As daughters of two of the most transformative figures in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Shabazz and Dr. King offered a powerful reminder: legacy isn’t something we simply inherit. It’s something we choose, every day, through how we serve, how we show up, and how we treat one another.

May this conversation inspire us to lead with integrity, speak with conviction, and keep doing the unfinished work of building a world rooted in justice and compassion.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, America declared its independence, setting forth ideals that have inspired generations to strive toward a more just and perfect union. Yet for millions, the promises of liberty, justice, and equality remained deferred. Our nation’s history has been shaped by the courage of those who insisted that freedom must be extended to all.

This Independence Day, we honor those whose sacrifice, perseverance, and moral conviction have brought our nation closer to its highest ideals, while acknowledging that the work of democracy remains unfinished. As Malcolm X reminded us, “True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what’s right.” Freedom is strengthened through conscience, civic responsibility, and a commitment to justice.

As we commemorate 250 years of America, let us renew our dedication to building a nation worthy of its founding promise—one rooted in liberty, justice, human dignity, and our shared responsibility to one another.

The work of justice continues, and so must our resolve.
