Jasper Johnsโ€™ โ€œCo**se and Mirror IIโ€ is filled with art historical references--most noticeably the title of the work, which references the Surrealist parlor game Exquisite Co**se, wherein each player draws part of a figure on a piece of paper folded to mask the other playersโ€™ drawings. โฃ
โฃ
In this four-paneled oil-and-sand painting, on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago (and the largest on view in ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด: ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ค๐˜ฉ) the three panels on the left are stacked to mirror the height of the single vertical panel on the right. If you look closely, you will notice the right panel is marginally less intense, โ€œas if it were a diminished monoprint of the left side laid next to it.โ€*โฃ
โฃ
Crosshatch, or cross-hatching, is traditionally defined in art historical terms as โ€œa method of showing shading by means of multiple small lines that intersect.โ€ According to Jasper Johns, the inspiration for his crosshatch works came from a pattern he glimpsed on a car that quickly passed him on a highway: โ€œI only saw it for a second, but knew immediately that I was going to use it. It had all the qualities that interest me โ€“ literalness, repetitiveness, an obsessive quality, order with dumbness, and the possibility of a complete lack of meaning.โ€โฃ

At first glance the painting appears to be monochromatic, however a closer look reveals hatches in subtle washes of red, blue, yellow, green, and orange, embedded between the bold black and white marks. One of the largest works in the exhibition, on loan from a private collection, โ€œUntitledโ€ is a subtle masterpiece best viewed in person. โฃ

The opening of ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด: ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ค๐˜ฉ has us looking back on some of our favorite past Jasper Johns exhibitions at Craig F. Starr Gallery. We canโ€™t believe itโ€™s been 11 years since we presented ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต from October-November 2008. This exhibition featured familiar motifs from Johnsโ€™ oeuvre: flags, numbers, maps, and Crosshatch, executed in a variety of printmaking techniques, including lithographs, intaglio, etchings, and aquatints. โฃ
โฃ
Johns created two separate, yet very similar, black and white Crosshatch works, both titled โ€œCo**se and Mirror,โ€ during the period of 1974-1976. The mixed media drawing (gouache, graphite wash, and graphite pencil on paper) pictured in the first slide is currently on view in It predates the lithographic version in the second slide, which is part of an edition of 58 created in 1976, and was featured in ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด in 2008. โฃ

We are so excited to have 11 groundbreaking Crosshatch works--including โ€œCo**se and Mirrorโ€-- currently on view at the gallery, and are especially thankful to Jasper for lending this work from his personal collection. โ€œNumbers, like other motifs from Johnsโ€™ early period, such as targets and flags, are the signs of our common culture. Of interest to Johns was their status as things that are looked at, but not โฃ
examined. By dislocating the numbers from their context as signifiers of quantity or time, Johns creates a new meaning for them. In painting numbers, Johns achieves both a non-illusionist representation and also an abstraction, as numbers are figures that represent an abstract relationship between symbol and idea. The number does not stand alone on the surface, to be read only as its representative signifier, but is embedded in surrounding strokes and marks that declare it a work of art. The inherent ambiguity between the image of an object and the object itself allowed Johns to introduce content into the compressed space of the flat picture plane. These tensions between representation and abstraction, subject and object, figure and ground, amplify the vitality of these images.โ€โฃ

Today, weโ€™re honoring American author, screenwriter, and film director, Michael Crichton, on what would have been his 77th birthday. Crichton, known for his science fiction novels, was also an avid art collector, and an authority on Jasper Johns' work. In 1976, the Whitney Museum asked Crichton to write the catalogue essay for their upcoming Jasper Johns retrospective, which he enthusiastically agreed to. In his own words:โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
"He [Jasper Johns] does very beautiful work. Heโ€™s an extremely interesting person to be around and his work I find challenging on many levelsโ€”itโ€™s intellectually challenging, itโ€™s visually challenging, and it rewards continued looking. You can have a piece of his work up for years and look at it and keep seeing new things and having new feelings about it. Not all artists are like thatโ€”in terms of their work."โฃโฃ
