Jeppe Hein's new project, 'Balance of Time', will arrive in Copenhagen this summer. ✨

Jeppe Hein has created the site-specific artwork ‘Balance of Time’ for Frederiksberg Allé 41, which thematizes life as a balance between control and letting go; bringing the different forces of life into harmony.

Jeppe Hein's artwork consists of a large sphere with a diameter of 2.4 meters, slowly circulating around the edge of the building's roof. The sphere's journey takes one hour, positioning itself at the corner of Frederiksberg Allé and Platanvej every 60 minutes. As a tribute to the rest of the iconic avenue's sequence of towers, 'Balance of Time' will be placed on the roof of the building on Frederiksberg Allé 41, thereby engaging in a dialogue with the other towers along the avenue, which are reflected in the artwork's surface. Central to the exhibition is the concept of windows. Using the sky as a background and the canvas' veneer as a foreground, the paintings become permanent structures for doodling. Like fingers playfully dragging across condensation on dirty glass, Madani projects her imagination into the ether as drawings of miniature stick figures, unidentifiable men, and buildings create scenes of narrative. Weather serves as a tertiary element between the dichotomy of what’s above and what’s in front. While weather can move clouds and fog up windows, in Madani’s pictures, it also transforms the figment of one’s psyche. ☁️

Happy birthday to the one and only Rodney Graham, who would have turned 74 today ❤️

Born in and based in Vancouver, Graham was a true polymath, steeped in art, music, film, literature, psychoanalysis and popular culture. Alongside Jeff Wall and Stan Douglas, Graham emerged from the University of British Columbia, Burnaby, Canada in the 1970s as a radical pioneer of lens-based media, albeit with the added ability to skewer and further the conceptual and minimal art practices prevalent in New York at the time. His works vary in materials, subjects and intention, but can always be said to be performative, whether that is in the noisy 35mm projector beaming moving images of a chandelier spinning out of control (‘Torqued Chandelier Release’, 2005, then realised as a physical work in Vancouver, 2019) or the artist recreating Albert Hoffman’s bicycle ride around Berlin’s Tiergarten after ingesting the first hit of L*D (‘Phonokinetoscope’, 2001).

Stephen Shore's latest body of work, 'Topographies: Aerial Surveys of the American Landscape,' reveals in arresting detail the interplay of natural and man-made landscapes in Montana, North Carolina, New York, and beyond, in photographs all of which are shot by drone.⁠

Here, Shore revisits the original ambitions of the renowned 1975 exhibition ‘New Topographics’, using a new aerial viewpoint to consider afresh the concerns of the movement – the objective, the commonplace, and the relationship of the natural and man-made in the American landscape – reflecting on how these might be applied in the twenty-first century.⁠

As much as exploring the formal possibilities of the aerial photograph, Topographies displays a glorious dedication to detail and surprise, in which the slightest bend of a river or turn of a shadow uncovers the textures and colours of America’s urban and suburban landscapes, all investigated with Shore’s signature rigour.⁠

Sam Falls, 'We Are Dust and Shadow', opens at on January 27!

Sam Falls’s show at moCa, the artist’s first major solo museum exhibition, offers expansive insight into his unique practice of collaborating with nature to create monumental paintings and sculptures. Falls’s poetic, ghostly works examine the sublimity and inherent melancholy of nature’s cycles and finite life. Interested in photographic exposure and representation, Falls experiments with the effects of sunlight, rain, and temperature, harnessing weather patterns and environmental conditions to create paintings, sculptures, and photographs in and with nature. In addition to new sculptures and paintings made by Falls in various national parks across the country, moCa is partnering with the Cleveland Botanical Garden & Holden Arboretum on programming and to support Falls’s creation of new ceramic works, using materials from Northeast Ohio.

52 Artists: A Feminist Milestone celebrates the fifty-first anniversary of the historic exhibition Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists, curated by Lucy R. Lippard and presented at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in 1971. 52 Artists showcases works by the artists included in the original 1971 exhibition, alongside a new roster of twenty-six female identifying or nonbinary emerging artists, tracking the evolution of feminist art practices over the past five decades.

Happy Birthday to Jane and Louise Wilson ! 🎂

Pictured is their work, “Untitled #13 'I'd Walk With You But Not With Her’’,” 2019, Pigment print on Hahnemuhle paper, 43 x 43 inches.

This work is part of a photographic series begun in the summer of 2018, when the Wilson sisters traveled to South Korea's Gapado Island to partake in an artist residency program, part of a broader initiative to preserve the island’s environmental and cultural values.

Printed on metallic photo rag paper, the imagery depicts sea urchins intertwined with island landscapes, lava rock stacks and deserted sites which were once shrines. Shrine worship is an aspect of shamanism on Gapado Island that is an integral part of the elderly generation’s traditions, notably the extraordinary group of female Haeneyo free divers who make their living harvesting and selling seafood. It is a practice that exemplifies their sister-like bond-- when they are together, they share everything. Due to the dangers inherent in free-diving and the changing tides of women in the workplace, their cherished tradition is in jeopardy. This body of work serves to investigate and demonstrate the psychic intersection between defensive architecture and Shaman shrines.

Esteban Jefferson, 'May 25, 2020', opens January 14 at 303 Gallery.

The exhibition’s title refers to the date of the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, and the beginning of a series of ongoing protests denouncing police brutality and racial injustice which immediately ensued in cities around the world. A life-long New Yorker, Jefferson’s latest works consider the related symbolism of flags and toppling of equestrian monuments in New York, through the lens of racial and colonial legacies. Through repeated visits to sites of protest, from small interventions like flags taped to a stop sign to large-scale vandalism of well-known colonialist monuments, Jefferson tracks the lifespan of the 2020 protests.

Happy Birthday to Mary Heilmann ! 🎊

For every piece of Mary Heilmann’s work—abstract paintings, ceramics, and furniture—there is a backstory. Imbued with recollections, stories spun from her imagination, and references to music, aesthetic influences, and dreams, her paintings are like meditations or icons. Her expert and sometimes surprising treatment of paint—alternately diaphanous and goopy—complements a keen sense of color that glories in the hues and light that emanate from her laptop, and finds inspiration in the saturated colors of TV cartoons such as "The Simpsons." Her compositions are often hybrid spatial environments that juxtapose two- and three-dimensional renderings in a single frame, join several canvases into new works, or create diptychs of paintings and photographs in the form of prints, slideshows, and videos. Heilmann sometimes installs her paintings alongside chairs and benches that she designs—an open invitation for viewers to socialize and contemplate her work communally. ✨

Happy Birthday to Elad Lassry! 🎈

Elad Lassry probes and disrupts photographic images and prescribed modes of looking to analyze the relationship between objects and their representations. Using various elements such as wire and stainless steel ball bearings to obscure images, Lassry alters the flatness and framing of his pictures to destabilize how we engage with photography. His rigorous conceptual strategies generate intentional collisions, highlighting perceptual paradoxes inherent to the photographic medium, while questioning the very meaning of pictures in contemporary culture.

On view will be three pairs of paintings made in the artist’s distinctive investigative style, contrasting meticulously rendered subjects with muted surroundings, as well as video work.
