In Matters, 門爺 reflects on Ed Young’s Bright Worlds and the quiet complexity of Young’s picture books—where children encounter form, fear, silence, memory, and the spaces between text and image.

On Memorial Day, we are honoring Lt. Benjamin Ralph Kimlau, a bomber pilot who died in service during World War II. As a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot, Kimlau flew B-24 Liberator missions critical to the Allied victory in the Pacific. After his death in 1944, Chinese American veterans honored him as a hometown hero through the American Legion Lt. B.R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post 1291 and the Kimlau War Memorial in New York Chinatown.

A stone bursts open.

A tiny life curls at the center.

In Ed Young’s Monkey King, the birth of the Monkey King is not shown as a grand, heroic entrance. Instead, it begins with fragments: torn paper, vivid color, and a small body surrounded by explosion.

Ed Young‘s beautifully illustrated book Monkey King, on view in his retrospective at MOCA, made some of us on staff think back to a 1999 animated film called Lotus Lantern. Specifically, we were curious about the way he depicted the birth of the Monkey King.

Why would the birth of a stone monkey feel so fragile, lonely, and human?

Part 1 of 2.
