Happy Birthday, Hilla Rebay! 🎉

An artist, curator, collector, and the Guggenheim Museum's first director, Hilla Rebay played an essential role in shaping one of the world’s leading collections of modern art. Her vision for nonobjective art helped guide Solomon R. Guggenheim’s collecting journey, beginning with the acquisition of Vasily Kandinsky’s "Composition 8" in 1930 and growing into a collection that would define the museum for generations to come.

Beyond her work with the museum, Rebay championed artists including Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Alexander Calder, Piet Mondrian, and Karl Schwitters, while continuing her own artistic practice throughout her life. Today, her legacy remains deeply woven into the Guggenheim’s history and collection.

Visit the museum to experience the collection Rebay helped shape, then stop by Café Rebay for coffee and a moment inspired by her enduring legacy. 🌀

2026 marks 20 years of the Guggenheim's Asian Art Initiative ✨

Established in 2006 under the leadership of Alexandra Munroe (), the initiative has shaped exhibitions, acquisitions, scholarship, and public programs while building a global network of artists, curators, and scholars.

Through the work of Munroe, Curator Kyung An (), and the initiative’s many collaborators and supporters, the museum has acquired more than 150 works by 100 Asian and Asian diasporic artists since 2006.

Groundbreaking exhibitions including Cai Guo-Qiang: I Want to Believe (2008), The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860–1989 (2009), Gutai: Splendid Playground (2013), Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World (2017–18), and Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s–1970s (2023–24) have continued to expand conversations around global modern and contemporary art.

As the museum looks toward the initiative’s next chapter, this milestone honors twenty years of collaboration, research, and global exchange.

As summer begins and a long weekend invites us to slow down, Pierre Bonnard’s "Dining Room on the Garden" offers a world suspended in time. Painted in the mid-1930s amid rapid change and global uncertainty, Bonnard turned instead toward intimate moments of everyday life: sunlight spilling through windows, shared spaces, and the shifting atmosphere of a quiet morning. ☀️

Across more than 60 dining-room scenes, Bonnard explored not just domestic life but the feeling of being inside a moment. Colors blur into one another, interiors merge with gardens beyond, and light transforms familiar spaces into something dreamlike. In "Dining Room on the Garden", the season feels almost tangible: warm, lingering, and fleeting all at once—a reminder to savor the small moments that define summer.
