SAVE THE DATE: On The Air, an exhibition organized by Darling Green, opens June 13 at Ulterior Gallery.

On The Air is a show about spoken words becoming artworks, and artworks that are only fully realized when they appear in public. It draws parallels between broadcasting, dictation, and publication as ways of making the inner outer, focusing on how a thing can be spoken into being, and strategies of immediacy that facilitate a work’s exit from the studio and into the world. The works in this show are itinerant artworks that happen to stop here for a moment, before they continue their journey, being passed hand to hand, or worn around town, or even stepped on in the street.

Featuring JJJJJerome Ellis, Kima / Lauren Kima Graycar, Lily Greenham & Andrew Walsh-Lister, Yusuf Hassan / BlackMass Publishing, Institute for the Study of the Urtext, Craig Leonard, Hanne Lippard, Glen Rubsamen & Rita McBride, Rick Myers, Aki Onda, and Rujuta Rao.

During the exhibition, Ulterior Gallery will mount a rotating presentation of artworks by gallery artists in the viewing room, connecting with On The Air.

“Though modest in scale, Deconstructed Bodies offers a surprisingly expansive view of what makes Kagoshima’s practice so compelling.”

We’re delighted to share Peter Kelly’s review “E’wao Kagoshima’s Downtown School of Fantastical Realism”, Impulse Magazine, May 19, 2026

“The subjects in the three aforementioned works seem to shift between animate and inanimate forms, resisting rigid categories of subjectivity, gender, and species.” — Peter Kelly, “E’wao Kagoshima’s Downtown School of Fantastical Realism”, Impulse Magazine, May 19, 2026

We are so grateful for this beautifully written and considered review. Thank you, Peter, for the care and attention brought to E’wao’s work.

A huge thank you to for having us at NADA New York 2026 – it was such a special week. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth to spend time with E’wao Kagoshima’s work!

If the work caught your eye at the fair, come see more from his earlier introspective years; Deconstructed Bodies, Kagoshima’s first solo exhibition with us, is on view at the gallery through June 6.

The show brings together his mixed-media drawings from 1976-1980 and collages from 1980-1981. It features works like these, where cut paper, drawn fragments, and found imagery come together in the most intimate and unexpected ways.

We’re at 424 Broadway, 6th floor, in NYC.

"By QINGYUAN DENG May 16th, 2026

Overslept but sleep deprived. Throat itches from second hand smoke inhalation, day time champagne, and late-night nonsensical-slash-truly groundbreaking conversations at what feels like a million parties. Did anything make sense? Everything and nothing at all. I think I missed a breakfast, but I will make it to the lunch. The anonymous Instagram account Artnotnet published that they miss the Frieze tent at Randall’s Island because taking a ferry means taking fewer steps. But I’m happy Frieze was at the Shed, a hop and a skip and a subway from what I found to be best at show, across all fairs, namely found at Future Fair, NADA, and Independent.

It’s spring in New York and I am in my element—as a writer, as a curator, and as a thinking, breathing human. Art is my respite. Paint pours, propaganda, fragility, the male physique, East Asian religious imagery, the legacy of minimalism, are on my mind, please enjoy my top five booths."

ARTnews “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies: Artists Revisit the N**e in Shows Across New York” By Alex Greenberger May 13, 2026
Thank you and Alex Greenberger for including E’wao Kagoshima among New York’s must-see shows. One of New York’s best-kept secrets, no longer!
“This spring in New York, it’s bodies, bodies, bodies, with artists across the city reveling in the pleasures of the flesh and the horror of harm done upon it. These are themes that are core to at least one major museum show on view in the city—the New Museum’s exquisite “New Humans: Memories of the Future”—and that may be one reason we’re seeing so much body-oriented art right now. But more than simply meditating on all matters corporeal, a smattering of shows have zeroed in on something more specific: the n**e and all the baggage that attends this artistic genre.
One would be hard-pressed to find a genre that is more prevalent in the Western canon—and one that is more fraught. Because of what still gets taught in intro-level art history courses, the n**e remains most closely associated with white male painters, misogyny, and racism. But a range of artists right now are revising the n**e to right the canon’s wrongs, and in the process taking up new issues along the way, from aging to political oppression.”
