Curious about dyeing with materials you forage yourself? Participants in this workshop will learn multiple plant-based dyeing and printing methods using kitchen and yard waste. We will start by learning how to identify natural versus manufactured fibers (fabrics and yarns), and how to set up a safe fabric and paper dyeing studio at home. The instructor will explain how to prep fabric for dyeing, including how to safely scour and mordant fiber. She will describe how different types of fibers interact with and absorb natural dyes; how to responsibly harvest and forage for natural materials in your neighborhood; and how to begin to identify plants, kitchen waste and spices that are safe to use and yield color. The instructor will also provide resources for learning more about local plants.

Participants will complete two projects which intersect natural dyeing and print-making — bundle dyeing and petal and leaf pounding. Finally, the instructor will discuss immersion or dip dyeing, and solar dyeing, and will share examples of artists’ books made with dyed fabric, yarn and thread.

This workshop is the final installment in a four part series which also covers embroidery, kitchen printing, and fiber book forms.

In this intensive, project-based course taught by CBA instructor María Verónica San Martín and offered as part of the Bookbinding Certificate Program, students will explore the artist book as a creative and expressive medium while developing their own original work over four sessions. The course begins with an inspiring introduction to the history and possibilities of artist books, featuring a presentation of contemporary examples to spark ideas and conversation, along with a close look at selected artist books from the Center for Book Arts collection, produced using letterpress and printmaking techniques as well as handmade binding structures. Students will then move into hands-on making, learning the fundamentals of constructing an accordion book with hardcover and embossed design, as well as a three-dimensional flag book, with plenty of room for experimentation and personal expression. Throughout the course, each student will develop an artist book guided by individual feedback and group discussion, with a focus on concept, narrative, media, and material choices. The course concludes with a supportive final critique and conversation, offering students the opportunity to share their work, reflect on their process, and learn from one another!

While the art of bookbinding may seem daunting at first, there are some basic book structures that make entering the world of book arts fun and accessible. In the introductory class “Virtual Bookbinding I” taught by Elizabeth Castaldo, you will learn the basic use of bookbinding tools and materials, along with simple bookbinding structures that utilize softcovers. Students will learn about non-adhesive structures, bindings for single sheets, and other bindings that can be made with little specialized equipment. Accordions, pamphlets, drum leaf books, and a variety of softcover bindings will be taught during the course. This class is ideal for those who wish to learn simple forms for presenting work, or for building fundamental knowledge on bookbinding.

Are you interested in new modes of displaying photographs and prints? Drum leaf bindings are lay-flat structures ideal for displaying them. The workshop "Drum Leaf Binding and Its Precedents" with Scott McCarney will introduce techniques for constructing book blocks for a Japanese Album, a Japanese Butterfly book, and a drum leaf binding which all have similar and ingenious modes of assembly. After learning these structures, participants will case-in their drum leaf book blocks with easily assembled quarter-cloth covers with throw-back spines. Since each page spread is a single folded folio, images can be printed across the gutter with no interruption, making this structure popular with printmakers and photographers. Once completed, these books lie flat when opened, making them easy and comfortable to view. No previous bookbinding experience required!
