In the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, Times Square had changed from an epicenter of tourist bustle, to a place that seems almost quiet.
Despite the absence of theatergoers and selfie-takers, there are still around 30,000 people, most of them essential workers, who pass through the square daily on their commutes.
As a way of saying Thank You to this workers, and to bring light to New York City, Times Square Arts, in collaboration with the Poster House Museum and Print Magazine, commissioned artists and designers to replace the usual advertisements with messages to New Yorkers.
Maira Kalman created "Love in the time of Corona".
It is a bright relief from the gray skyscrapers, and offers us space to consider how we find and experience love, no matter the distances between us.
We wish you and yours safety, health, and most of all love, during this uncertain time.
With assists from Shepard Fairey and Maira Kalman, graphic designers and illustrators are creating striking visual messages of safety and gratitude.
