Founded in 1845, we are the oldest cultural institution in the state. Through exhibitions, publications, and pro

gramming, we examine who and what we are, what it means to live and work in New Jersey, what contributes to New Jersey's distinct identity, and what are the unique contributions New Jerseyans make to the region and the country.

On this Memorial Day, we reflect on the bravery of Sergeant William Sawelson and Corporal Thomas E. O'Shea, both Medal of Honor recipients from World War I. Their courageous acts in the face of danger exemplify the true spirit of service and sacrifice. As we remember their legacy, let us also acknowledge the countless others who have given their lives for our freedom. Learn more about them as well as others in the exhibit "Send The Word" here at The NJ Historical Society.

NJHS mourns the death of Hope Alswang. Hope was our Executive Director from 1992 to 1997 and passed away on June 11th. Working with a highly committed board and staff, many of whom she hired, Hope led the revitalization of the oldest cultural institution in the state. The most tangible example of her leadership is the acquisition, renovation and move to 52 Park Place in Newark. This new home gave NJHS a more visible and accessible location in an important downtown neighborhood near the New Jersey Performing Arts Center which opened shortly thereafter. Under her leadership, diverse collections were built, interesting exhibitions were developed and community outreach was established. We will always be grateful for her commitment and service to NJHS. Our thoughts at this difficult time are with her family and loved ones.
