This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the men and women of the military from our communities whom lost their lives serving our country. As we honor these fallen soldiers we recognize that it’s often through community with one another that we are able to heal collectively.

Be sure to swing by the museum this Saturday as we celebrate 🎊 Community Day here at the Newark Museum of Art 🖼️ May 30th 12pm - 5pm Tickets 🎟️ are free and can be downloaded via the link in our bio🔗

⭐️Come out and enjoy science & art such as this painting by Grace Ravlin ⭐️

It shows what might be a Memorial Day parade in front of the Plaza Hotel in New York, with Central Park in the distance.  In a letter to the Director of the Museum, Ravlin described the painting as being “done on the spot and otherwise than being a typical street scene of New York of that period has no special story attached to it. The effort was to seize the light and movement and color of the scene.” 🇺🇸

This is in the Made in Newark section of The Ballantine House 🏠. This section of the House was meant to highlight the Newark community as a city with a history of artists, craftspeople, and industrial workers.⚒️

The Sullivan family lived here in Newark and they saved this memento of the donor’s early years 🍼✨. While Newark was known for its silver industry, this spoon was not made here. It was probably purchased in a Newark shop or department store as a baby gift.🥄🛍️

Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was a Japanese American artist who is best known for his abstract sculptures. 🗿

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent backlash against Japanese Americans motivated Noguchi to cofound the Nisei Writers and Artists Mobilization for Democracy, a group dedicated to raising awareness of the patriotism of Japanese Americans✊🏽. He then voluntarily spent six months at the Colorado River Relocation Center (Poston) internment camp for Japanese Americans in Arizona.

Following his release from Poston, Noguchi began a new series of delicate interlocking marble and slate sculptures. Of the material he wrote: “Unlike working with wood or metals, there could be no temptation to weld or glue. The very limitations of the medium imposed a kind of honesty; to find the minimum means for construction and expression rather than the myriad possibilities that metal welding involved.” ✍️

Taking inspiration from a popular Indian comic book that retells epic stories 📚, Ganesh appropriates the past to posit a “South Asian” future 🌏. She references ancient mythologies to offer a speculative time ahead when marginalized people are empowered. In this artwork, Ganesh’s futuristic vision centers on themes of reflection and regeneration in times of uncertainty. ⚖️

Take a moment to review its dynamic imagery🌌

In the early decades of the nineteenth century 🕰️, and especially after Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821 ✊🏽, foreign travelers flocked to Mexico eager to see a new country with their own eyes.👀

🧵Garments like the sarape seen here were central to the exotic, picturesque Mexico they constructed.

Mexicans themselves saw the sarape as symbol of Mexican identity✨. It was popularized by Men vaqueros, or cowboys, and gained its iconic status when it was adopted by members of the upperclass who supported Mexican independence.✊🏽
