The defining style of the second Trump administration is an incompetent form of authoritarianism that can best be described as “haphazardism.”

Haphazardism is authoritarianism without vision, a governing style defined by a series of individual attacks on democracy without any kind of overarching logic, strategic structure, or clear end state in mind. These attacks can do (and indeed have done) real damage to the American political system, but they are often poorly executed and even self-undermining — preventing Trump from ruling in the truly unconstrained manner he seems to desire.

“Is he succeeding at breaking democracy? Yes,” said Steve Levitsky, a Harvard political scientist and author of How Democracies Die. “Is he succeeding at consolidating autocratic power? No.”

What if we could teach cancer cells to destroy themselves?
That’s the groundbreaking science happening in Dr. Loren Walensky’s lab, fueled in part by Alex’s Team funding. His team has developed “stapled peptides” that reactivate apoptosis, the natural cell-killing signal that cancer shuts off.

These compounds have shown the ability to suppress human-type leukemia in mice. Even more, they are now used around the world to help researchers understand, and disrupt, the survival systems of cancer cells.

This year, Dr. Walensky and his team shared their journey at Spirit Ball - a story of scientific innovation, personal connection to Alex, and determination to change the future of pediatric cancer forever.

It is most definitely worth supporting these medical students as they create their paths to their (and our) future in pediatric oncology research and care!!

Alex’s Team created the Alexandra J. Miliotis Pediatric Oncology Research Fund to empower the brightest medical students at Harvard Medical School to advance breakthroughs in childhood cancer.

We have funded over 50 Fellows, studying everything from genetic mutations to new treatment methods to family support programs. And the impact lasts: over 70% remain in pediatric oncology after their fellowship.

This year, we welcomed:
✨ Simran Bansal, partnering with Dana-Farber’s Palliative Care & Resilience Team to help young cancer patients voice their values and priorities during treatment.
✨ Sneh Patel, working to uncover genetic risk factors that may lead to early-onset childhood cancer — with the goal of predicting, preventing, and improving outcomes.
✨ Josie Wilson, evaluating tumor surveillance in pediatric patients with cancer predisposition syndromes to facilitate earlier detection and improve patient outcomes.

Their work isn’t theoretical. It brings real hope to real families — right now and for years to come.
