George Matthew Allee (1877-1958), the son
of Jesse J. Allee and Mary E. Kingman of
rural Newell. Allee graduated from Newell
Public School, attended Cornell College and
graduated from Harvard University In Agronomy in 1904,
at the age of 27. His lifetime was spent developing strains of corn that would withstand
early frost and give his cattle a better gain of weight.
He dedicated
his life to the development of early
strains of in-bred corn seed, which led to
the hybrid corn seed farmers are using
today. A great deal of credit goes to Allee
for the value and success of the Iowa Corn
Yield Test, developed in Iowa and now
used throughout the world.
Allee gave generously of his time,
knowledge and money, making lasting
contributions to the betterment of the
farm community. He also inspired and
loaned funds to area students to attend
college.
