Old Newnan High School
The old Newnan High School, constructed about 1913, stood at Jackson Street and Temple Avenue. After a new Newnan High School was constructed on LaGrange Street, the old building was used as a junior high starting in 1956. It closed after the school year ended in May 1973, and the modern O.P Evans Junior High off Hospital Road opened in the fall of 1973. Then the building was torn down to make way for a city park known today as Veteran’s Park.

Kayce Denise is an award-winning vocalist, actress, director, and educator whose remarkable career spans stage, screen, and arts education. A Georgia native celebrated for her powerhouse vocals and captivating presence, she has earned critical acclaim for performances in The Color Purple, Caroline, or Change, 9 to 5, Hairspray, Legally Blonde, and The Drowsy Chaperone, garnering multiple Suzi Bass and BroadwayWorld Award recognitions along the way.

Her artistic impact reaches far beyond the theatre, with credits that include Greenleaf, Fight Night, P-Valley, The Mahalia Jackson Story, and PBS documentaries produced with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Throughout her distinguished career, her work has contributed to projects recognized with Grammy, Emmy, Stellar Gospel Music, and NAACP Image Awards.

This scene shows a sixth grade class of the former Temple Avenue School in Newnan, probably in the early 1900s although the exact date is unknown. This photograph was obtained by Frank Bezenah.

Join NCHC for 3rd Thursday, Aug 20, 6 PM with local historian celebrities Steve Quesinberry and Winston Skinner! Quesinberry discusses the expansive history of Newnan High School and highlights from his newly published book, "Flagship." And Winston Skinner goes waaaaaay back in time to one room school houses outlining the progression of education in our county to what it is today. Skinner will hit highlights from the book "Coweta School Days." Both books are available for purchase and signing at the event. Refreshment reception begins at 5:30 pm followed by the program from 6 to 7 pm. Don't miss this unique opportunity to marvel at how education has evolved through the decades in Coweta!

The Marry Ray School located in the Raymond community,located northeast of Newnan near Sharpsburg,on Sheddon Avenue, this old school was built in 1908, at the cost of twelve hundred dollars. The school was fully equipped and presented to the town of Raymond by R.F Shedden,a prominent farmer. Mrs. R.F Shedden named Raymond for her father John David Ray, a Confederate veteran and developer of the Ray Plantation. The school was named for her mother Mary Ray. Mrs. Allie Snyder was one of the students of the first school session, and S.L. Robertson told how he and C.C. Owen of Newnan came to school in an ox cart. Two school rooms and a lunch room were added to the original building, and a hand-painted canvas curtain was installed on the stage. At one time the school was put under the direction of the county because of lack of funds for proper operation and upkeep. It was turned back to Raymond when the schools were consolidated and moved to East Coweta. Later the G.I. 's used it for a while for study. The building is still standing at 771 Raymond Shedden Avenue and is used as the Raymond Community Building.
