Today marks our final post of the Conservation Curious series. We appreciate you all taking this journey with us to learn about what it means to care for a place like The Mariners’ Museum and Park. To wrap up this series, we will answer the question, “Why conserve?”

Conservation ensures the long term preservation of our living and museum collections. The Museum houses over 3,200 objects, approximately 110,000 volumes of books, journals, and microform in our Library, and around 9,000 linear feet of archival material; the Park has 550-acres of land, 5-miles of walking trails, and a 167-acre freshwater lake. Taking care of these areas allows not just our generation to learn and enjoy these artifacts and outdoor spaces, but gives future generations the opportunity as well.

This poignant photograph, captured over 80 years ago, serves as a powerful reminder of the solemnity and sacrifice that define Memorial Day.

On May 30, 1944, just one week before the D-Day landings in Normandy, Staff Sergeant James M. Piercey, Station Compliment Battalion, stood at attention with basic trainees of the 2nd Platoon during Memorial Day services at CPH, Pennsylvania.

Today, we join those who have come before us in honoring all who have served and sacrificed for our freedom.

National Maritime Day, celebrated on May 22, was created to recognize the maritime industry in the United States. ⚓ The significance of the 22nd is that on this day in 1819, the first ever transoceanic voyage using steam power began when the American steamship Savannah set sail from its namesake city in Georgia. Here at The Mariners’, we have a ship model of SS Savannah (pictured here) on display within our USS Monitor Center. Be sure to check out this beautiful ship model on your next visit!

Give it up for week three of Conservation Curious! For today, we explain what Environment Conservation entails.

Environmental Conservation is the practice of protecting the natural environment. Its objectives are to conserve natural resources and the existing natural environment and, where possible, to repair damage and reverse trends.

The Environmental Conservationists here at Mariners Park take great pride in caring for our Living Collection within the park. Several conservation efforts include continuous research, forest management, water quality testing, and wildlife habitat restoration. Through these efforts we can preserve this valued resource for the future generations to continue to be inspired by the flora and fauna that live in Mariners Park.
