The Newport Art Museum was founded in 1912 on the belief that arts and culture have the power to bring diverse groups of individuals together, which ultimately promotes civic engagement and strengthens the social fabric of our communities. This core idea continues to inform our Museum's direction today. Our gallery spaces feature artworks from our permanent collection, as well as rotating exhibiti

ons that showcase contemporary artists from around the world. The galleries are further animated with dynamic public programs, from artists’ talks and a Winter Speaker series to performances and films. Our robust art education initiatives serve diverse audiences, including underserved populations through our outreach programs, public and private schools, practicing artists, and students of all ages who take classes in our Museum School, which is housed in the Coleman Center for Creative Studies. Many of our activities are the result of collaborations with other arts, cultural, design, environmental, health, and social service organizations, all adding to a rich mix of experiences and perspectives. When you participate, our mission is activated. When your voices are heard, our work is relevant. Engaged conversations provoked by the art on the walls and the making in our studios create important connections. Be part of it!

Join us TOMORROW (Thursday, June 4th) from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, following the Museum's Annual Meeting, for the opening reception of UNFURLING: SMALL WORK BY THE 2027 ART CUP ARTISTS!

In 2027, the Newport Art Museum will partner with Sail Newport and Shields Fleet 9 to present the 2027 Art Cup, an exhibition of work by contemporary artists printed onto the sails of over a dozen Shields sailboats. The sails will be hoisted for a special, one-off regatta held just offshore of Fort Adams State Park.

UNFURLING features small works by seven contemporary artists whose imagery will appear on the sails. Together, they offer a glimpse into each artist’s practice. For the Art Cup, each artist will create a new work conceived specifically for the sails.

This Exhibition is organized in collaboration with Sail Newport (), special thanks to Brad Read and Eve Formisano.

We have new railings!
Thanks to the generosity of the Charles A and Lois H Miller Foundation (), grant writing of Director of Operations Brandon Taylor Miller, and the skill of James Langston, we have an elegant solution to curb tripping issues at our entrance.

James also crafted a lovely railing for our artist/lecturer apartment, and is currently making some repairs to the Griswold House’s grand staircase.

Before. During. After. 💫

Our curatorial team is hard at work installing Sheila Isham: Between Worlds, a sweeping presentation tracing more than six decades of the artist’s deeply personal exploration of abstraction. From luminous fields of color to meditative works shaped by travel, philosophy, and spiritual inquiry.

We are deeply grateful to the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Society Fund, with special thanks to Sam Bolton and Patricia Lewley for making this exhibition possible, bringing renewed attention to an artist whose ethereal paintings move fluidly between cultures, philosophies, and states of inner being.

We can’t wait to share this remarkable exhibition with you soon!

Members of our Education Team had the pleasure of attending the 2026 New York City Museum Educators Roundtable Annual Conference, hosted at the iconic American Museum of Natural History ().

Throughout the conference, NAM staff engaged in a dynamic range of breakout sessions centered on topics such as non-traditional forms of advocacy within museum spaces, trauma-informed community collaborations, integrating accessibility for neurodivergent learners, and so much more!

NYCMER offered invaluable opportunities for professional growth, critical reflection, and meaningful dialogue with museum educators from across the region.

Our team was especially grateful for the opportunity to connect with cultural leaders and organizations from across New York and beyond, including The Studio Museum (), Artistic Noise (), Midtown Community Justice Center (), The Brooklyn Museum (), New York Public Library (), Phoenix House (), The Noguchi Museum () and countless others.

Thank you to for cultivating a space that encourages thoughtful exchange, collaboration, and forward-thinking ideas that will continue to inform and strengthen our work within the Newport community.

Visit the Newport Art Museum on Free For All Saturday (Saturday, May 23rd) from 12-3pm to enjoy exhibition related art-making and a special performance art piece (at 1:30pm) by exhibiting artist in Play / Pretend, Entang Wiharso ( )!

Taking inspiration from Indonesian culture and Gamelan music, Wiharso’s puppet art and performance — Rutwatan Jiwa (Soul Purification: Tree of Life) performed by Wiharso, Sylvia Ann Soares, Drajad Seto, and Dan Covey — examines the duality of cultures and experiences in his two homelands, Indonesia and the United States, expanding ideas that connect spirituality and transcendence, nature and the life cycle.

Play / Pretend is on view now through January 2027.

Free For All Saturdays are generously supported by BankNewport.

Fall into the rich, layered world of Gordon Peers’ "The Grand Venice", where a bustling crowd gathers among Venetian architecture awash in bold color and thick, impasto texture. Mosaic-like skies, glowing light, and closely gathered figures draw you into a vivid, almost dreamlike city scene. ✨️

On view now in our newest exhibition, Play / Pretend.
