A Hero Remembered, Never Dies

Today, we honor the memory of Deputy Sheriff Carlos B. King, the first deputy with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office to make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

On September 23, 1871, Deputy King was killed in what is now Harvey County after he disarmed Thomas Edwards, who was disturbing the peace, and removed him from town. Edwards later returned armed and shot Deputy King.

At the time, Harvey County had not yet been formally organized, and Sedgwick County held judicial and administrative responsibility for the area. While historical records are limited, Deputy King is believed to have been serving as a deputy with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

This year marks 155 years since Deputy King’s sacrifice.
