This illustrated trade card advertised the business of Stillman C. Spaulding, “merchant tailor” of Newton Centre, who owned a dry-goods store on Station Street in the 1860s and 1870s. What does this whimsical scene have to do with a dry-goods business? On the reverse of the card, Spaulding calls “the special attention of parents” to a new product he offers for sale: children’s shoes with reinforced toes.

"He comes around in sweet apple time, climbing the trees in his slow, clumsy fashion and if you find the ground littered with small twigs you know Prickly Porky has been there."

Apple-picking a is a beloved New England fall pastime, but did you know porcupines also enjoy eating apples? This whimsical letter was written and illustrated by Newton educator Evelyn Ellis to her first grade student, Nathaniel Robert Tufts of Newton Centre.

Historic Newton holds twenty of the letters Ellis wrote to Robert from 1925-1926, just before Robert's premature death at age 7 from polio and pneumonia in April 1926. Ellis' letters mostly discuss the mischievous activities of various animals around her parents' property and surroundings near Ludlow, Vermont.
