🎨Ock Soon Kwon (b.1952), Rise of Azalea, 2023, watercolor on paper, 13 x 17 in (33 x 44.5 cm)…and detail images
Whether painting from a photograph she had taken during her daily walk to nature or drawing inspiration from a black and white image she had found in a newspaper article, Ock Soon Kwon’s efforts singularly manifest into a dynamic fusion of tradition and historical context with personal narratives. Along with Korea’s characteristic sceneries of nature across the four seasons, Kwon’s favorite subject matter include persimmons, a magpie, an azalea field or wild raspberries, all of which are familiar symbols and emblems that appear in popular Korean legends and folklore. While strictly adhering to the classic medium of watercolor on paper throughout her career, Kwon has succeeded in developing a unique style of her own whose compositions, elegant brushstrokes, and a color palette evoke traditional Korean ink paintings of Joseon Dynasty (1492-1910). Through the emotional impact of color and form, Kwon’s work resonate with the viewers, conjuring up a sense of tranquility, presence and belonging.
