Hello again, Monday Milestone fans. On this first day of June, we celebrate 1838 - the year of Newtown Borough's birth.

The Borough, which is entirely surrounded by Newtown Township, has been enlarged four times since 1838, and its buildings show excellent examples of all major architectural styles.

Visit the Half-Moon Inn any Sunday except holidays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, where you can see this history panel and more in person. The History of Newtown Exhibit is located on the second floor.

What a beautiful evening last night for a meaningful community gathering. With the sun shining and approximately 40 attendees, the Newtown Historic Association, led by Board member Brian Rounsavill, was honored to host the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Newtown Heritage Walk sign at Lighthouse Hill Cemetery.

This special event recognized the rich history of Lighthouse Hill Cemetery and its deep connection to Newtown’s African American heritage, including the legacy of St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church and the many individuals laid to rest on these sacred grounds.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us to help honor the past, celebrate this important preservation effort, and ensure these stories continue to be remembered for generations to come.

On Wednesday, May 27, from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM, we invite you to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Lighthouse Hill Cemetery sign and learn more about the cemetery from NHA historian and research lead, Brian Rounsavill.

This cemetery is a deeply historic site that serves as the final resting place for numerous African American residents and veterans. While official archives once listed fewer than 100 names, recent research has documented at least 186 individuals buried there. Most of these graves remain unmarked, as many residents at the time could not afford grave markers.

Lighthouse Hill Cemetery is located at the intersection of Frost Lane and N. Congress Street, Newtown, PA 18940. This event is free and open to the public.

On this Memorial Day, Monday Milestone fans, we shine the spotlight on our beloved Newtown Hall (Newtown Theatre). Originally built in 1831, the Hall soon became the center of entertainment in Newtown. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Aren't we lucky!

Looking for something to do today? The NHA Callahan Research Center on Mercer Street is open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Come visit to see a special exhibition: the Annual Memorial Day Tribute to Local Veterans. You won't be disappointed.

And a reminder that the Half-Moon Inn is open any Sunday except holidays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The History of Newtown Exhibit is located on the second floor.
