The Philadelphia City Council has officially designated May 21 as “Ona Judge Day” to honor the remarkable life of Ona Judge, one of the most significant figures in the city’s history of resistance to slavery. A woman formerly enslaved by George and Martha Washington, Judge made a bold escape from captivity, ultimately finding freedom in New Hampshire. Her actions not only challenged the institution of slavery but also highlighted the courage and resolve of those who fought for their freedom.

The resolution, which was passed unanimously by City Council members on the same day it was introduced, serves as a tribute to Judge’s resilience and daring escape. The declaration reflects Philadelphia’s commitment to acknowledging the contributions of figures like Ona Judge, who have been historically overlooked but whose actions played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s journey toward freedom.

This momentous step underscores the city’s recognition of Ona Judge’s legacy and the importance of continuing to tell the stories of those who defied unimaginable odds in the pursuit of liberty.
