As a major resource for the visual arts in Niagara County, the CAM's permanent collection includes over 5,000 pieces of mainly modern and contemporary art. The museum is committed to the professional care and preservation of this artwork.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Kath Schifano

With just one week until Party on the Portico, we’re excited to introduce one of the talented artists who will be creating work live during the event: Kath Schifano.

A celebrated plein air and studio artist, Kath is known for her luminous landscapes and atmospheric scenes that capture the beauty of both local and international places. Working in oil and pastel, she paints directly from observation, translating changing light, weather, and the rhythms of the natural world into vibrant works that balance realism and impressionism.

Kath’s artwork can be found in collections ranging from the Castellani Art Museum and Niagara University to institutions across the United States and abroad. Her dedication to painting outdoors—returning to familiar locations to discover new perspectives—has made her a respected voice in the Western New York arts community and beyond.

Join us on Thursday, June 25, to watch Kath create a new work in real time alongside fellow artists Doug Mess, John Sauter, and Joel Mulindwa. During the evening, we will also recognize Kath as part of CAM’s ongoing initiative to provide lifetime museum memberships to artists represented in the museum’s permanent collection.

Summer starts on the Portico. ☀️🎨

Join us on Thursday, June 25, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. for Party on the Portico, CAM’s annual celebration of members, artists, and community.

Enjoy an evening of live music by pianist Kevin Clark, plein air-style live art demonstrations by Kath Schifano, Doug Mess, John Sauter, and Joel Mulindwa, and light bites generously sponsored by the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

This year’s event also marks the relaunch of the CAM Gift Shop, featuring a rotating selection of artwork, prints, notecards, and artful gifts by regional artists. Guests will get a first look at new offerings and learn how the live artworks created during the evening will become a special collection of prints available for purchase later this year.

We’ll also celebrate artist Kath Schifano as part of CAM’s ongoing initiative to provide lifetime museum memberships to artists represented in our permanent collection.

Whether you’re a longtime member, a returning friend, or visiting CAM for the first time, Party on the Portico is the perfect way to spend a summer evening surrounded by art, creativity, and community.

From the CAM Collection Archive

Today, we remember David Hockney (1937–2026), a groundbreaking artist whose influence extended far beyond the boundaries of painting. Throughout a remarkable career, Hockney embraced printmaking, photography, drawing, stage design, and emerging technologies, continually challenging conventional ways of seeing and representing the world.

A leading figure of British Pop Art, Hockney brought a distinctive blend of observation, color, humor, and innovation to everything he created. His work captured both the extraordinary and the everyday, inviting viewers to look more closely and experience familiar subjects with fresh eyes.

The Castellani Art Museum is honored to hold four works by Hockney in its permanent collection, including:

🖼️ Made in April, 1977
🖼️ Henry Geldzahler, Cigar in Mouth, 1978

What made Hockney’s work so enduring was not simply his mastery of image-making, but his lifelong curiosity. Whether working with etching plates, cameras, iPads, or stage sets, he approached each medium as an opportunity to explore new possibilities.

His legacy can be found not only in museums around the world, but also in the generations of artists who continue to experiment, question, and reinvent the act of looking.

We are grateful to preserve and share his work as part of the CAM Collection.

Issue 3: Art in Motion is now available free of charge in the Museum’s Sculpture Court during regular museum hours.

This summer issue explores the ideas, artists, and exhibitions shaping the season at CAM. Inside, you’ll find an interview with Inge Schuster (.schuster), whose work is featured in Ctrl+Alt+Dream: Surrealism Then and Now; a preview of upcoming fall exhibitions featuring artists Sasha Stiles () and Joel Mulindwa (); highlights from recent acquisitions to the museum’s permanent collection; and much more.

What an incredible evening.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night to celebrate the opening of King of Power, Queen of Beauty and Hardwired: Foundational Works in Digital Art. The galleries were filled with thoughtful conversation, new discoveries, and a shared appreciation for the many ways art helps us understand our world.

A special thank you to our partner, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (), for their collaboration on King of Power, Queen of Beauty and for generously sponsoring the evening’s refreshments.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the King Family and to Randall Gamby and Lorelei Barrett for their generous artwork loans, which helped enrich the exhibition and deepen the stories we are able to share with our visitors.

Long before AI-generated images, social media, and virtual realities became part of everyday life, artists were experimenting with computers, video, code, networks, and emerging technologies—asking questions that remain remarkably relevant today. Hardwired traces these early innovations through works from the Castellani Art Museum’s permanent collection, highlighting the pioneers who helped redefine what art could be in the digital age.

Opening alongside Hardwired is King of Power, Queen of Beauty, developed by the Castellani Art Museum in collaboration with the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. Through historic prints, photographs, ephemera, and contemporary artworks, the exhibition explores the enduring duality of Niagara Falls as both a symbol of natural beauty and a source of immense power.
