On our first full day in County Mayo, Ireland, we took our group of 12 over to nearby Burrishoole Friary, very near Newport.
Burrishoole is a special place to me,the Friary was founded in 1470. A place for quite contemplation, at least for me. The grounds have a cemetery surrounding the structure and inside the ruins of the Friary are some magnificent grave tombs, with wonderful hand carving on them. The still standing walls are pretty special too. The site is surrounded by water on two sides and is located on high ground, looking down at the water.
This image was made inside Burrishoole and is a winding stairway, long ago closed off. I was able to squeeze my camera through the gate bars closing off access. The light coming through the tiny window described the scene just perfectly to my eye. I seemed to be drawn to subjects that present themselves in an abstract way.
