May 27, 1944: The 41st Infantry Division lands on Biak as part of the Allied drive to clear New Guinea in preparation for an invasion of the Philippines. American forces face brief resistance on the beach when they land. Anticipating no further resistance, the 162 Infantry Regiment moves deeper inland. When they reach Biak airfield, they realize they have been lured into a kill zone. Pinned to the ground for hours by heavy Japanese fire, it is evening before the regiment can be rescued. Over the next weeks, US forces make slow progress on Biak. The tactics used by the Japanese on Biak will be repeated at Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
