The first public library in the US opened on May 21, 1803 in Connecticut. 100 years later, Norfolk got its first public library that opened on November 21, 1904 quietly in the Freemason district just a few blocks down from the Hunters.

Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 to built this beautiful building on land donated by William Selden’s children. You can still check out the exterior of this building, which is now privately owned on West Freemason Street.

In the Victorian Era, world’s fairs were a grand adventure for all. Millions of people would journey thousands of miles to explore the grounds. The Hunter family, like the rest of the world, were also fascinated with world’s fairs. The collection the family left behind has shown their love of travel. It is not surprising to learn they saved items from their travels to world’s fairs. Though fairs were being held all over the world, the Hunters mostly attended fairs in the United States that highlighted and honored important milestones in our country's history. This year, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the founding of our country, we wanted to join the Hunter's in celebrating the history of America with our summer exhibit "A Day at the Fair: An Exploration of Exhibitions and Celebrations of American History". This exhibit will run this June through August.
