❗️❗️ UPDATE: Thanks to all those who expressed interest in our designer call! The application is now closed. ❗️❗️
Are you a student or professional designer with a passion for sustainability? Join the James Wise Gallery at Norfolk State University in making a positive impact on our environment through fashion!
Our current exhibition, “Living Apart: Redlining,” sheds light on health, socio-economic, and environmental disparities in Hampton Roads. The eco-fashion show, which will take place during the exhibition’s reception, aims to emphasize the beauty of upcycled clothing, encouraging others to see fashion in a new way and minimize the amount of discarded materials sent to landfills.
We invite you to participate by creating an upcycled garment. Get creative with discarded textile waste, thrift store treasures, or even items from your own closet that are no longer in use. Your challenge is to transform these materials into a stunning, upcycled fashion piece that aligns with our theme.
Fashion Show Event: October 27th
Submission Details:
✨Your creation must consist of at least 70% upcycled textiles and materials, so let your imagination run wild with recycling and repurposing.
✨Only well-constructed, and thoughtfully designed garments will be permitted to participate.
✨There will be two to three rehearsal dates the week before the show. Designers must agree to attend at least one.
✨We plan to conduct a model call, however, if you have a unique piece that is for a specific body type, please plan to provide your own model(s).
To participate, please submit your intent to participate by October 7th. Final designs, artist statements, and model details are due by October 21st.
Please send your submissions to LaKaye Mbah at [email protected]. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Ms. Mbah.
