🗓️ Keep the date: Friday, Oct. 27th

Join us Friday, October 27th from 5 - 8PM for the Living Apart: Redlining reception! The night will be packed with exciting events from artist talks to dancing to a sustainable fashion show!

So many student and professional designers answered our call for designers and they’re already hard at work creating their pieces. The designers were challenged to create upcycled garments using discarded textile waste and thrift store treasures that emphasize the beauty of sustainable fashion and help minimize the amount of discarded materials sent to landfills.

Make sure to check back often to get updated about the night’s program. It’s going to be a fun night, you don’t want to miss it!

✨ Exhibition Exclusive ✨

An interesting feature of this exhibition is its large floor map! This vinyl map installation is very unique because it is printed to scale for each exhibition space. So there’s no two alike!

You are standing on a 1,250 square foot floor map that uses high resolution aerial photography to show the Hampton Roads region. The map has a scale of 1:6,500, meaning that one inch on this floor map equals about 500 feet in real life! 1 foot = about 1 mile

Thanks to this high resolution, you are able to see so much detail… you can practically pick the boats out of the water! Students have already found the Norfolk State University campus on the map!

Make sure to visit the exhibition before November 15th to find your spot on the map!

❗️❗️ UPDATE: Thanks to all those who expressed interest in our designer call! The application is now closed. ❗️❗️

Are you a student or professional designer with a passion for sustainability? Join the James Wise Gallery at Norfolk State University in making a positive impact on our environment through fashion!

Our current exhibition, “Living Apart: Redlining,” sheds light on health, socio-economic, and environmental disparities in Hampton Roads. The eco-fashion show, which will take place during the exhibition’s reception, aims to emphasize the beauty of upcycled clothing, encouraging others to see fashion in a new way and minimize the amount of discarded materials sent to landfills.

We invite you to participate by creating an upcycled garment. Get creative with discarded textile waste, thrift store treasures, or even items from your own closet that are no longer in use. Your challenge is to transform these materials into a stunning, upcycled fashion piece that aligns with our theme.

Fashion Show Event: October 27th

Submission Details:
✨Your creation must consist of at least 70% upcycled textiles and materials, so let your imagination run wild with recycling and repurposing.
✨Only well-constructed, and thoughtfully designed garments will be permitted to participate.
✨There will be two to three rehearsal dates the week before the show. Designers must agree to attend at least one.
✨We plan to conduct a model call, however, if you have a unique piece that is for a specific body type, please plan to provide your own model(s).

To participate, please submit your intent to participate by October 7th. Final designs, artist statements, and model details are due by October 21st.

Please send your submissions to LaKaye Mbah at [email protected]. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Ms. Mbah.

From October 4th until November 17th, the James Wise Gallery will house the Living Apart: Redlining exhibition!

EXHIBITION RECEPTION: October 27th, 2023

Living Apart: Redlining is a traveling exhibition that uses maps, photographs, and personal accounts to trace the ongoing impacts of our country's long history of housing discrimination.

This unique multi-media exhibition was created by Dr. Johnny Finn, who is an associate professor at CNU. It was also made possible thanks to the support of NSU’s Fine Art faculty and students, Dr. Newby-Alexander, NSU’s EJ Incubator, and the Center for African American Public Policy (CAAmPP).
