d'Art Center

d'Art Center Located in the NEON District, the d'Art Center is Norfolk's community art center! There is always something new to admire during your visit to d'Art Center!

Our building is comprised of three galleries, resident artist studios, and multiple activity rooms. The d'Art Center's Main Gallery and Vault are rotated monthly with new and nationally curated exhibitions, while our Artist Wing displays our frequently updated community artists' work. d’Art Center History:

As Norfolk’s community art center, The d’Art Center proudly serves the greater Hampton Road

s area by connecting the community with the visual arts. A non-profit 501c (3) organization, d’Art offers both youth and adult art education and classes, exhibits that give the public a broader exposure to many local and national artists, programming and outreach through art in public spaces, and events to showcase local artists, ceramicists, sculptors, fiber artists, and woodworkers. Celebrating thirty five years in 2021, d’Art was founded in 1986 at the College Place location in downtown Norfolk. Modeled after the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, part of d’Art’s mission from the onset was to provide working artists with affordable, short-term studio space. In 2005, the d’Art Center relocated to the historic Selden Arcade, continuing a legacy as a vibrant arts organization. The d’Art Center remained at the Selden Arcade for the next ten years. After an explosion caused major damage to the d’Art Center at the Selden Arcade, the d’Art Center organization recovered, regrouped, and revived itself in the New Energy of Norfolk (NEON) Arts District at its Duke Grace Building location. In 2021, d’Art Center moved into its forever home in the NEON District: The Atlantic Permanent Building. The NEON District is anchored by the Chrysler Museum of Art, Harrison Opera House, and The d’Art Center, and extends to The Plot on Granby Street. The NEON District includes many creative small businesses and arts partners

d’Art Center’s Main Gallery:

The d’Art Center’s Main Gallery is located within The Center at 740 Boush St. Norfolk Virginia, in the heart of the NEON District; Norfolk’s Art District. d’Art’s 2,200sqft gallery has incredible visibility to Boush Street traffic and pedestrians due to its massive street side window facade. The gallery is also amongst a thriving new apartment community of over 400 new apartments and more than 1,000 residents. The Vault:

This one hundred and thirty two square foot exhibition space is a historical bank vault within the center, and gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk Arts District (The NEON District). All styles and aesthetics are considered.

Welcome Julz Kerr to the d'Art Center Board of Directors!

After living in Norfolk from 2011-2014, Julz is happy to officially call Norfolk home with her family. Julz always had a passion for the arts and nonprofits. She is a classically trained harpist and is now partaking in watercolor classes. At one point, she was a harp and piano teacher at the Fine Arts Association in Willoughby, OH, as well as a volunteer supporting their annual auction. She was also on the Board of the Cleveland Clinic House Staff Association as the Social Chair where she organized monthly activities for resident couples at the Cleveland Clinic. She has enjoyed being back in the area and learning more about the art scene in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Julz’s personal mission is to dedicate her time in supporting local communities and promoting performing arts in the community.

Welcome Tom Markey to the d'Art Center Board of Directors!

"I was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, and attended Norfolk Collegiate School before continuing my education at Virginia Tech. After graduating, I began my professional career in the technology sector, working as a data engineer where I focused on building data systems, improving operational efficiency, and supporting data-driven decision-making initiatives.

In 2024, I returned home to Norfolk to join my family’s business, Chesapeake Marine Refrigeration, a third-generation company serving the maritime industry. As Vice President, I am involved in overseeing operations, strategic planning, and business development, while helping modernize internal systems and processes. My background in technology and analytics provides a unique perspective as we continue to grow and adapt within a highly specialized technical field.

Having grown up in Norfolk, I have seen how meaningful community engagement—particularly through the arts—strengthens the cultural and economic vitality of our city. Simply put, people want to be around beautiful and aesthetically pleasing things, and I believe strong local organizations like D’Art Center play a critical role in cultivating that beauty. I am eager to support initiatives that expand access, participation, and long-term impact. I look forward to bringing both a forward-thinking mindset and a deep appreciation for our region’s heritage to my service on the board."

His breadth of experience in hotel and hospitality operations gives him a strong understanding of how vibrant communities and cultural destinations intersect. Welcome Amanda Terrill to the d'Art Center Board of Directors!

Amanda began her Human Resources career with Caesars Entertainment in 2012, first on the Corporate Recruiting team, then moving into Employee Relations. She started with Boyd Gaming Corporation in 2017 in Corporate Human Resources, supporting many different HR functions, including policy writing and administration, mediation, coaching, and designing and implementing companywide culture and engagement initiatives. She relocated to Norfolk, Virginia from Las Vegas in July of 2025 to take on the role of head of HR for Boyd’s upcoming Norfolk casino.

Amanda discovered an interest in theatre and performing arts at a young age. During middle school and high school, she was an avid drama and speech/debate student and developed a love for technical theatre.

In 2003, Amanda had her first opportunity to work as a Production Assistant on a local production of “Sweeney Todd”, and she was hooked. She worked for the next decade in a variety of production roles for several Las Vegas community theatre production companies.

In 2008, Amanda was asked to join the music ministry at St. Thomas More Catholic Community in Henderson, Nevada, and went on to become a lead cantor and a singer in other groups within the ministry. Amanda also began performing small roles in shows and worked as a volunteer for several years with a youth theatre company.

Amanda’s passion is advocating for and inspiring others. Through her time in theatre and performing, she has been given opportunities to meet people from all walks of life and learn in what ways the performing arts move them. Advocacy with integrity is something Amanda firmly believes in and strives to practice daily through her work in Human Resources. Amanda actively learns from team members the importance of feeling heard and valued.
