Founded in 1933 as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Chrysler Museum of Art combines one of America's great fine arts museums, a Glass Studio, and a significant historic home. Tseng Kwong Chi, the "granddaddy of selfies", was a Hong Kong-born American photographer. 📸 One of his most famous bodies of work, "East Meets West", is a self-portrait series comprised of more than 100 images.

Using a Rolleiflex camera and a shutter-release cable, Tseng poses in his artistic persona as a Chinese "ambiguous ambassador" to life in America. Wearing a stereotypical Mao suit, we see Tseng in front of iconic landmarks across the United States and beyond. 🌎

Through "tourist" photography, his work playfully uses humor and irony to explore questions of identity, belonging, and the American experience.

Wishing everyone a Happy Memorial Day! 🇺🇸 Today we honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country. 🙏

This image, "Daytona Beach, Florida" (1971) was captured by American photojournalist Burk Uzzle. Uzzle, who became one of Life Magazine's youngest contract photographers at 23 years old, has spent more than six decades documenting American life with a deep commitment to social justice and human storytelling.

This image was featured in "The Portrait in America", a 1990 exhibition built almost entirely from the Chrysler Museum's own photography holdings, that traced the American photographic portrait from its invention in 1839 through the modern era. 📷
